Mission Statement
Our mission is to help children and other learners develop essential life skills through fun and stimulating chess programs.
About This Cause
Chess Institute of Canada's founder, Ted Winick, has been proving since 1998 that the ancient game of chess has the potential to offer tremendous social benefit far beyond that of a mere intellectual pastime. Our specially designed curriculum and training makes explicit connections to deeper life lessons. Moreover, we are committed to extending these benefits in places and to individuals who would not otherwise have access to them. We are looking for your support to elevate thinking and mindsets and bring about real change on a personal level! We use chess to: • Develop thinking skills: logic, geometric vision, planning, the decision-making process, the importance of taking risks, etc. • Develop social skills: the courtesy of turn-taking, showing respect for oneself and others, appreciating the unique value of each of the various pieces, learning to win gracefully, etc. • Elicit emotional growth: instill confidence, build healthy attitudes towards learning and loss, discover hidden talents, foster independence, improve self image, etc. • Develop a positive attitude to life challenges: academics, relationships, athletics, life choices, etc. Our educational approach to chess is delivered through: • Extra-curricular clubs where everyone is welcome (both in-person and online) • In-class programs where everyone in the class takes part in both on-the-board and off-the-board lessons (including as a virtual guest in the classroom) • Tournaments (on P.A. Days and other holidays) where lessons are put into competitive practice, and carefully selected activities underscore life lessons • Camps, where daily themed activities along with chess lessons and play offer opportunities for profound personal change • Various other innovative programs specially designed for specific groups and communities
