Project Details



Rosetta is a project by Dr. David Baker at the University of Washington. Rosetta is trying to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases. This will also assist in efforts at designing new proteins to fight diseases such as HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer's.

This project is simple for anyone to join, you just have to install an application on your computer, and have it run. The challenge is, running a personal computer at 100% for months on end, is not what a typical PC is designed to do, so it can stress components and cause them to fail. There is also the cost of electricity, running 4-8 cores, can cost hundreds of dollars per month. So, if you aren't a tech enthusiast with hardware designed for high performance computing, or don't have a place to put several systems to run this kind of work, we have a great option for you.

Cancer Computer runs Rosetta on all our systems in "scavenge mode" which means, when any core is sitting idle, on any of our servers, in any of our datacenters, we will run Rosetta workloads.

You can make a donation, and get up to 60% of your donation back from a tax receipt (varies by region), and not have to worry about paying for hardware, or the electricity to run it...you can let us do that.

We get donated hardware from wonderful organizations all over, the real cost is in running servers 24 x 7 x 365 at full-load, for several years. This is where your donations go.

Funding this project for 4 years at 7.375k/year, we estimate we could provide between 3-4% of all the computation necessary, help improve the odds for cancer patients by learning about the structure of proteins, and designing custom proteins, to help cells combat their cancers.
