Mission Statement

GCN (Gay Community News) is Ireland's national LGBTQ+ media. First established in 1988, GCN has been a key resource for the LGBTQ+ community in Ireland since. GCN is a vital resource to inform, educate, connect and advocate for Ireland's LGBTQ+ community. GCN provides a platform for members of the community, organisations, support groups across Ireland and emerging talent, giving them a voice to highlight current issues, their work and services available

About This Cause

GCN (Gay Community News) is Ireland’s longest-running national LGBTQ+ publication and a not-for-profit registered charity. It was first published on February 10, 1988, when activists Tonie Walsh and Catherine Glendon sought to establish a free LGBTQ+ publication. At the time of its first publication, homosexuality was still illegal in Ireland, and GCN became a lifeline to many LGBTQ+ people. Since then, GCN has been a key resource for the community. GCN’s mission is to inform, educate, entertain, platform and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, driving positive change to foster a more equitable and inclusive society. By documenting the lives, struggles and triumphs of our community, we ensure visibility that informs policymaking and helps create a more equal society. GCN's work is grounded in a deep understanding of the needs and challenges of the Irish LGBTQ+ community and has continually evolved to address these needs and confront the prevailing issues of the times. GCN is owned and published by the National Lesbian and Gay Federation (NLGF CLG), which is a voluntary organisation.
