Mission Statement
Nochlezhka helps homeless people as well as poor people, providing them with the necessary goods and protecting their rights. Our mission is to find the most efficient ways of preventing the problem of homelessness in Russia and providing social rehabilitation of homeless people. We try to debunk numerous myths related to problems of the homeless and make people understand that there is no “us” and “them”, that anyone might become homeless in certain circumstances, so it is a misconception to think that ‘there is no need to help as it is their own fault’.
About This Cause
60,000 homeless people live on the streets of St. Petersburg (Russia). The average temperature in the winter is - 8C here. Many people die on the streets during 5 cold months, and many people became disabled. Meantime the public shelters have only 220 beds for the whole city. Nochlezhka has rehabilitation center with 50 beds, and provides not only a roof over one's head and a daily meal, but also social services to help homeless individuals return to ordinary life. Nochlezhka runs several humanitarian and social projects which help homeless and poor people. 1. Rehabilitation center. The largest rehabilitation centre for the homeless in the city with a capacity of 52 beds. Each year, hundreds of people are rehabilitated and go back to normal life with the help of therapists, social workers and lawyers. 2. The counselling service where anyone can come and get free help from social workers or lawyers. 50-70 people come to see Nochlezhka’s social workers every day. The hotline experts of the counselling service have helped thousands of people to go back to normal life. In 2015, 2,678 people were consulted and obtained other types of assistance assistance from the hotline service personnel. 3. The Night Bus is a project of mobile help for those in need. Over the recent 14 years since the project was launched, the project volunteers have given food to tens of thousands of hungry people, having handed out over 420 000 of hot meals. 4. The heated tents accommodating up to 50-60 people are opened annually. Starting from December up to late March anyone can find their shelter and hot food as well as get some medical help. Each winter hundreds of homeless people come to our night shelters for help. Thanks to Nochlezhka’s efforts, the local administration and social policy committee now also take part in funding the project. Besides, the local authorities have started opening their own heated tents in some districts. 5. Halfway home rehabilitation programme for alcohol or drugs addicted homeless. The project has helped hundreds of people to get rid of their addiction. 6. In November 2016 Nochlezhka opened the first free laundry service in Russia. Over 2 months more than 1000 people used its services to clean their clothes.
