About This Cause
Brooke is an international animal welfare organisation dedicated to protecting and improving the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules which give people in some of the poorest places in the world the opportunity to work their way out of poverty. The lives and welfare of people and animals are intertwined. Over 100 million working horses, donkeys and mules provide invaluable support to daily life for an estimated 600 million people in some of the poorest places in the world through haulage, transportation and production. Healthy working horses, donkeys and mules help to put food on people’s tables, send their children to school and build better futures for themselves and their families. They are the backbones of communities and the best means of making a living for many. Sadly many working animals across the world suffer from exhaustion, dehydration and malnutrition as a result of excessive workloads and limited animal health services. This suffering affects their ability to work, and results in insecure livelihoods for the people relying on them. Many of these problems can be avoided which is where Brooke’s work helps. We work hard to deliver significant and lasting changes, even in some of the world’s most challenging environments. We use our expertise to train and support owners of horses, donkeys and mules, local vets, farriers, harness makers, and animal traders to improve the standards of care. Operating in 11 different countries, and funding projects in others, Brooke now reaches more working horse, donkeys and mules than any other organisation. The time we spend in communities builds capacity, strength, resilience and independence so that better animal welfare will continue long after we’ve gone.
