Mission Statement

Arts & Homelessness International is a global network for the arts/homelessness sector; bringing positive change to homeless people, projects and policy through arts and creativity

About This Cause

Arts & Homelessness Int is a UK charity that works at the intersection of arts and homelessness globally. We are a network with 500 projects and NGOs working in all creative fields with homeless people around the world. Homelessness is not just about housing - it is often caused by or results in trauma, ill-health, exclusion and adverse poverty. The arts and the cultural sector have important roles to play in the process of healing, connecting and employment for people going through this crisis. Research has shown that arts programmes benefit homeless people through increases in well-being, agency, resilience and skills (Shaw, 2019). AHI runs programmes which work with creatives who are homeless, organisations and policy makers. This includes an annual professional development leadership programme for creatives; training and capacity building for organisations from grass-roots, micro projects starting-up to national museums wanting to deepen their access and involvement for homeless people. We also work with local government to help include arts programmes in services and to involve homeless people in decision making. AHI emerged out of projects at the 2012 and 2016 Cultural Olympiads in London and Rio and has been recognised by the UN as an example of best practice in the homelessness sector.
