Mission Statement

Action for Stammering Children is the national charity for children and young people who stammer, their families and the people who support them. We are here to ensure that every child who stammers has the support, respect and confidence to live the life they want to lead. We support and empower parents, caregivers and professionals; facilitate and champion research; and campaign for changes in societal attitudes and policy.

About This Cause

At Action for Stammering Children, we believe every child deserves to be heard, understood, and celebrated. We want a future where having a stammer has no impact on your ambitions. Our belief is that every child should be who they want to be. But for the 8% of the children in the UK who have a stammer it can have a detrimental effect on their current and long-term mental, social and emotional wellbeing. Everyday tasks that many of us take for granted- things like talking with friends, answering a question at school, ordering or saying your own name- can bring with them feelings of stress, frustration, anxiety and embarrassment. This has to change. We believe that every child should be who they want to be. Children and young people who stammer, together with their families, should be free to choose how they want to communicate. This means being able to access effective and prompt support – whether that is therapy, trusted information, or helpful guidance. At the same time, no one should ever feel ashamed, held back or under pressure to hide their stammer. That’s why we also work to transform attitudes and bring about lasting social change We have a range of projects to bring about change. These include: ASC Mentoring Scheme pairs young people who stammer with mentors with lived experience of stammering in the workplace. Our mentors give career advice, support on speaking with confidence in the workplace and guidance on overcoming barriers. Talking Out Therapy Courses are week-long residential speech therapy programmes, combining group speech therapy with outdoor activities to support young people who stammer in gaining confidence. ASC Stammer Awareness Toolkit is an interactive, online training resource for primary and secondary schools, developed with input from young people who stammer, their parents, teachers, and speech & language therapists. It aims to support teachers in creating a supportive and inclusive environment for students who stammer ASC Stammering Support Hub provides key information for children and young people who stammer, their families and the professionals who support them. We sign post them to relevant resources, support and answer often asked questions. Research Projects: Research is central to Action for Stammering Children’s mission. Our recent Priority Setting Partnership with the James Lind Alliance ensures that the research we support addresses the key questions and priorities identified by the stammering community. This collaboration helps us focus on the most impactful areas of study, driving advancements in understanding stammering and how it affects outcomes. Your support can help us ensure that every child and young person who stammers in the UK has access to the support, resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
