Mission Statement

Friends of Davyhulme Park are a group of local volunteers who are working hard to bring the park back to its beautiful old self. FODP raised funds to replace and open up the old rose garden and beds to bring it back to life. In 2018 we planted over 280 new rose bushes, in a variety of colours, in the six rose beds. With funding kindly donated by Stagecoach, the old bandstand area was planted with lavender, rosemary, geraniums etc. and the children from Davyhulme Primary school planted hundreds of spring bulbs. A beautiful wooden bus sculpture and a plaque sit proudly amongst the flowers for all to enjoy. Since then, we have had problems with mare's tail, an invasive & seemingly indestructable weed, so we've had to remove all plants, weeds etc & have got the Council Gardeners to apply weedkiller. We have put down layers of wooden chippings, a layer of membrane then more layers of chippings. Next, we intend to put in whisky-barrel type planters full of colourful plants to make the area beautiful & interesting to look at. In July 2018, Mancunian graffiti artist Kelzo transformed the concrete skate park and created a tribute to the 22 victims of the Manchester Arena bomb. Bees and flowers now adorn the ramps and this has been enjoyed and welcomed by children of all ages. Davyhulme Bowling and Social club also carried on the bee tribute and the shutters on the pavilion are a sight to behold. In 2019, an application to the Woodland Trust for the Queens Canopy saplings was successful & a planting ceremony took place with local children, an oak tree & time capsule was also planted on behalf of Manchester airport's 80th birthday, which coincided with our park's 80th too! This regenerated an area that was previously neglected and overgrown. An area of small trees and brambles have been left undisturbed for the wildlife. In 2023 City of Trees arranged for 100 tree 'whips' to be planted by the school children in the SE corner of the boggy field, helping to soak up some of the excess water. They also arranged for 11 new, larger fruit trees to be planted along the paths, one of which is to mark the King's coronation in 2023. We also have a bench to mark that occasion, installed in September 2023. In 2018 Manchester Airport donated funding for a defibrillator which is sited at Davyhulme Bowling Club pavilion. This gives us peace of mind. Our two large ponds are now clean and thriving with a large selection of wildlife. Lily pads have been added to create shelter & protection to the many fish and newts. In 2018 a beautiful sculpture, donated by United Utilities, sits proudly overlooking the ponds. It is of a giant acorn with a cheeky squirrel on top. In 2022 & 2023 the ponds saw moorhens successfully producing young chicks & in 2023 & 2024 a pair of Mallards produced young ones too! Old paths have been opened up and shrubs and trees pruned to create new walkways. This has helped to open up the visibility across the park, so it feels safer and looks nicer. One Trafford/Amey have helped us achieve this, which has pleased GMP, who requested this work to be done, for security reasons. With 2 bowling clubs, 3 tennis courts, 1 basketball court, children's play area, beautiful gardens etc. there is something for everyone to enjoy. In 2022, we were pleased to get funding to replace the old damaged roller hockey/football court with a scooter/bike park, which is educational as well as good physical exercise. This has been very popular with the young learner bikers & scooter riders & their families, who can sit & observe from the sides. In 2019/20 we created a Veteran's Garden near the Winchester Road entrance, next to Winchester Bowling club. It has a newly created large flower bed with lots of varieties of plants & two benches with a Military design on their backrests. These were donated by a local DJ & fundraiser, 'Johnny Spangles', who was very keen to get involved with this project. It is designed to be a peaceful place for folk to enjoy, especially any of our local Veterans, who may suffer from PTSD. In 2020, we commisioned the local chainsaw artist, Mike Burgess, to create a beautiful Owl, which sits high up on a tree stump over looking the park. He also created 2 Fairy Houses, complete with doors & windows carved into 2 smaller tree stumps, these have been very popular with young children. In 2021, Mike created us a very tasteful Bee sculpture as a fitting memorial to the 22 victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena Bombing. We have arranged funding for more sculptures by Mike this year, 2024, which we are looking forward to installing soon. We are on social media. Friends of Davyhulme Park on Facebook and Twitter. We still hope to have a website up and running in the near future. (Your application form does not appear to recognise our Facebook and Twitter names, so I've left that column blank! Also, it fails to allow me to crop our logo effectively!)
