About This Cause
We are the non-profit affiliate of the American Psychiatric Association, the country’s oldest medical society serving more than 37,000 psychiatrists. Together the APA and APA Foundation work to ensure that all individuals have access to effective mental health care and treatment. Our community-based programs are designed to educate and empower. They are focused on removing barriers to mental health care, increasing public awareness and addressing the chronically unmet needs of underserved populations where they live, learn, work and worship and play. Schools Our school-based program, Notice. Talk. Act® @ School, has been implemented in over 165 cities in 42 states, effectively equipping middle and high school educators and school personnel with an increased awareness of mental health in youth, leading to increased connections for students and their families with appropriate services and supports. In 2021, our program impacted over 21,250 students. Workplace The Center for Workplace Mental Health is recognized as a national leader among employers of all sizes to effectively address their needs. The Center has worked with more than 10,000 diverse employers, from American Express to IBM to Sprint, to develop case studies, issue briefs, infographics, training programs, tool kits, Virtual Town Hall Meetings and more. Employers value the Center’s long-standing experience and expertise in delivering reliable resources that meet today’s need to create mentally healthy and high functioning organizations. Justice The Stepping Up Initiative is a national movement to provide counties with the tools they need to develop cross-system, data-driven strategies that can lead to measurable reductions of individuals with mental illness in jails and prisons. The Judges and Psychiatrists Leadership Initiative creates a marriage between medicine and the judiciary through web-based and in-person trainings to champion initiatives that address the overrepresentation of individuals with mental illness in the criminal justice system. More than 1,300 judges in 23 states have been trained to date. APAF Fellowships nurture the Mental Health Workforce of the future. Focused on diversity leadership and minority populations, behavioral health sub-specialties and leadership development in the field of psychiatry, APAF Fellowships support and inspire medical residents in the field of psychiatry, so to address the critical shortage of mental health providers in this country. Community Our community-based programs reach underserved groups through faith leaders, medical students in local schools, and local mental health experts and organizations. • Each year, the APAF grants Awards for Advancing Minority Mental Health to outstanding community organizations that have undertaken innovative, supportive efforts. • The Helping Hands Grants Program provides grants of up to $5,000to medical schools for mental health and substance use disorder projects, particularly in underserved minority communities. In the past 12 years, we have distributed $400,000 in grants to medical students for community outreach programs. • The Mental Health and Faith Community Partnership, founded in 2014 developed the Mental Health: A Guide for Faith Leaders, to foster education, awareness and compassion so faith leaders can best support their congregations’ mental health needs.
