Mission Statement
The Shenandoah Mountain Rescue Group (SMRG) is a professional, all-volunteer wilderness search and rescue organization established to provide assistance to those who become lost or injured in the outdoors.
About This Cause
Along with other member organizations of the Appalachian Search and Rescue Conference (ASRC), SMRG responds to emergencies anywhere in Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia to conduct searches for missing persons or aircraft, and to carry out rescue operations in wilderness areas that require specialized equipment and techniques. Additionally, SMRG maintains a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) to respond to state-wide search and rescue incidents throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, and a memorandum of understanding with Shenandoah National Park (SNP) to assist with search and rescue operations within the jurisdiction of the park. Based in Vienna, Virginia, SMRG has over 100 active members with expertise in wilderness medicine, land navigation, search and tracking techniques, land/air evacuation methods, and emergency incident management. Our teams are dispatched to scores of search emergencies annually, and operate in conjunction with state and local authorities as well as other ASRC groups. SMRG also operates several "preventative search and rescue" (PSAR) initiatives, including visitor outreach and standby staffing at Shenandoah National Park during peak visiting season. Our members receive extensive training in wilderness survival, land navigation, land/air evacuation methods, search techniques, radio communications, team leadership, and other areas that are key to our operations. Training is conducted in both the field and the classroom, and sessions are administered at no cost to our membership. No previous search and rescue experience to join - only a willingness to participate and a desire to learn. SMRG is dispatched to conduct wilderness searches for missing/injured persons, aircraft, or evidence. Once the dispatch occurs, our members travel to the search location. Upon arrival, they coordinate with other search organizations, volunteers, and law enforcement officers to inspect a wilderness area in search of the subject. Our searches frequently occur in rugged terrain, so we generally deploy ground teams, although assistance may be provided by aerial and motorized searchers as well.
