Mission Statement

BCEF helps provides quick and compassionate emergency financial assistance to low income people battling breast cancer in order to cover basic human needs, lessen financial burdens and improve quality of life. As one BCEF client recently remarked: “How can I recover at home from a double mastectomy if I am evicted while I am in surgery?” Help from BCEF means a woman can focus on her health and her family without worrying about the cost of fighting cancer. BCEF is the only agency dedicated to addressing the financial barriers to cancer care in the Bay Area. Since 2001, BCEF has provided over $3.5 million in assistance to more than 3,000 low-income breast cancer patients and their families in need.

About This Cause

Proudly serving San Francisco & Silicon Valley! WHO does BCEF help? BCEF provides assistance to hundreds of low income breast cancer patients and their families living in San Francisco, San Mateo, or Santa Clara counties. We are unique in that we have never denied assistance to a qualified applicant nor created a waiting list for aid. In 2016 • The average monthly income of all BCEF clients was $817. • The average amount of financial assistance we provided each client was $1000. • 83% are people of color and/or immigrants. • 76% of our financial assistance went to housing costs • 30% have more than one dependent child in their household. • 49% are in either stage 3 or stage 4 breast cancer when they apply for asissitance. Nearly all BCEF clients lose their livelihood when they miss work to keep medical appointments. They quickly juggle medical bills with rent, utilities and the cost of raising a family in the Bay Area. For BCEF Client Stories: www.bcef.org/ our-services/client-stories HOW does BCEF work? With the help of our extensive network of community service providers, breast cancer patients in active treatment can apply for financial assistance for drug and treatment copays and uninsured medical expenses; medical insurance premiums; housing assistance; utility payments; telephone services;transportation costs; belongings storage; urgent dental care; and funeral costs for patients who have lost their battle against breast cancer. In 2016 we made the following: 436 payments to help cover rent, mortgage or housing 97 payments towards essential household utilities 70 payments to help cover uninsured medical expenses 55 payments to keep telephone connected 47 payments for transportation to medical appointments 17 payments to help cover funeral expenses WHAT makes BCEF different? • Unlike most national or regional assistance programs which can have one to three month wait times, the average turnaround for BCEF assistance is 5 business days, frequently just 2 days. • Other than BCEF, there is no immediate resource for low-income breast cancer patients to fill prescription medications, stop an eviction or keep the lights on.
