Mission Statement

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Westmoreland, Inc. is a volunteer-based organization that serves the Dependency Court by providing citizen Volunteer Child Advocates who will be court appointed for specific foster children/sibling groups in Westmoreland county who have been placed in foster care due to abuse or neglect in their home of origin. CASA recruits, screens, trains and supervises these citizens who become officers of the court and provide the court with independent, fact-based reports about the children's well-being in care, report any emergent needs of the children and monitor compliance with court orders for services ordered at the outset of the case. In addition, CASAs provide fact-based recommendations for a permanency solution that is in the children's best long-term interests. While it is the Court's decision to make, CASA Advocates' input is a valuable component to the court in their deliberation.

About This Cause

In our society, the basic needs and rights of children and their safety are entrusted to their families, but when the family cannot or will not meet their obligations and compromise the safety and health of child, the child enters the foster system. When this happens, hopefully in their corner, is a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). CASA volunteers are a formidable force that fights for these rights, provides a voice for a child in the courtroom and the chance at a better future. When the future for children is improved, it is an investment in reviving and growing a strong future for the community. Located in the heart of the Greensburg community at the Westmoreland County Courthouse, CASA of Westmoreland, Inc. is the local 501(c)(3) non-profit serving children who have been victims of abuse and/or neglect by their parents or guardians. CASA of Westmoreland, Inc. is the only organization of its kind in the county and assists the courts in the child’s placement in a safe, permanent and nurturing homes soon as possible. CASA advocates provide a needed ‘extra set of eyes and ears’ on a case to ensure the best interest of the child is being honored. For many neglected and abused children, their CASA volunteer is the only reliable adult presence in their lives. This single volunteer can be enough to break the cycle of violence- not just for one child, but for generations to come.
