Mission Statement

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

About This Cause

Since 1912, girls have explored new fields of knowledge, learned valuable skills, and developed strong core values through Girl Scouts. Today Girl Scouts is, as it always has been, the organization best positioned to help girls develop important leadership skills they need to become successful adults. At Girl Scouts, guided by supportive adults and peers, girls develop their leadership potential through age-appropriate activities that enable them to discover their values, skills, and the world around them; connect with others in an inclusive environment; and take action to make a difference in their world. These activities are designed to be girl-led, cooperative, and hands-on—processes that create high-quality experiences conducive to learning. Girl Scouts Heart of New Jersey (GSHNJ) was established in October 2008 through the merger of three long standing legacy councils. These legacy councils of GSHNJ have been providing youth development services to girls and young women since the 1920s. GSHNJ serves more than 16,000 girls, ages 5-17, and thousands of adult members across the heart of New Jersey. The Council's geographic area spans 138 communities including urban, suburban, and rural population centers in seven New Jersey counties—Essex, Hudson, Hunterdon, Somerset, Union, and portions of Middlesex and Warren. Since our formation, we have offered New Jersey girls relevant, impactful leadership development opportunities that help them grow into productive, valuable members of society. Girl Scouts is an ever-present organization, built with the intention of supporting girls in whatever circumstances they find themselves. Even now, as similar organizations are collapsing, Girl Scouts is continually reengineering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience to fulfill our promise of giving girls access to life-changing experiences that inspire them to do something big. Through the efforts of our committed force of adult volunteers, at GSHNJ girls can experience the outdoors and engage in a myriad of outdoor activities - like swimming, archery, and hiking - at our three camp properties. Through local, national and international Girl Scout-sponsored travel experiences, girls expand their cultural horizons and meet other citizens from near and far. Our Cookie Program helps girls hone their entrepreneurial skills by developing marketing plans, creating and managing budgets, and working directly with customers. Our community service and High Award projects encourage girls to identify problems in their community and take action to address them. Our growing menu of STEM programs, such as stop-motion film, coding, engineering, and astronomy, provide girls with a safe and fun space to explore STEM subjects.
