Mission Statement
The Mission of the Friends of the Alameda Free library is to: Provide a variety of ways to contribute to the ongoing services and growth of the Alameda Free Library for the enjoyment and benefit of the entire community; Steward the Library and its many services and programs through fundraising to supplement public funding, advocacy and volunteerism.
About This Cause
Founded in 1974, The Friends of the Alameda Free Library helps support the library and it's programs through volunteer activities and fundraising. Its activities serve the community of Alameda as well as the Greater San Francisco Bay Area. Milestones include: The opening of a new Main Library (2006). Merger with the Alameda Free Library Foundation (2016). Programs include the following and all proceeds benefit the programs and services of the Alameda Free Library : Friends @ Home Docent Talks and Author Events- Online. Online webinars focus on Authors from a variety of Genre and Docent presentations in collaboration with ongoing Museum shows. Including San Francisco De Young, Legion of Honor. 20-25 programs annually. Past artists include: George Takai, Lauren Gunderson. Dewey's Friends Café- Now open! Providing library patrons a quiet space for reading. Provides small snacks and beverages for purchase. Big Used Book Sale- October 2024 Our biggest fundraiser of the year. Volunteers needed! Books For Friends Used Bookstore: Gently used book source located in the Alameda Free Library. Live@ The Library Concerts- 3 Single Jazz Concerts featuring world class musical artists. The Friends supports the following Library programs. Alameda Reads Literacy Program. Family Summer Reading Series. Library Equipment initiatives. Movie Night! and many unique events throughout the year. The Friends of the Alameda Free Library is an all-volunteer organization that provides essential support to the Library’s programs and services.
