Mission Statement
Bloom Again Foundation provides rapid response financial assistance for living essentials to working women who live at the poverty level when a diagnosis of cancer or other illness causes them to miss work.
About This Cause
Bloom Again is unique among nonprofit organizations in that it bridges the gap between what social services provide economically vulnerable women who miss work due to a diagnosis of cancer or other illness and the living essentials required for daily survival. Nearly 65% of low-income women earn zero paid sick days. These are not women trying to have it all, they are women doing it all -- and often alone. For them, even one missed day of work can wreak financial havoc. Bloom Again does not provide assistance for medical care, but rather focuses on ensuring when a medical challenge arises, the rent is paid, the utilities remain on, there is food on the table, and she has transportation to and from medical treatments or doctors appointments. We partner with other nonprofits in the community who are familiar with the women and their situations. These "strategic partners" vet the women to ensure they meet our narrowly defined criteria for funding: must have worked within the past year, must live at the federally defined poverty level, must have been diagnosed within the past 3 months with an illness that caused them to miss work, and must intend to return to work as soon as medically advisable. Funding is then provided in the form of a check to the landlord, to the utility company, food cards, or bus or gas cards. No cash is given directly to the woman in need. Bloom Again is an all volunteer organization that keeps overhead to a minimum, typically below 15% of income. Funding comes from individual donors, corporate sponsors, fundraising events, and, to a lesser degree, foundation grants. Donors report that they continue to support Bloom Again because they know exactly where their dollars go, often receiving stories about the women they have helped. We have been honored with acknowledgement by Pasadena Weekly newspaper as the "Best Charity" in the city.
