Mission Statement

Halo House’s mission is to help save the lives of cancer patients battling leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma by offering them access to clean, temporary, and affordable housing so that they can pursue treatment at the Texas Medical Center (TMC). We do this by providing fully furnished apartments for $25 a day to people who must often stay for months of treatment.

About This Cause

Blood cancer patients are required to live, at most, twenty minutes away from their treatment center. Thus, thousands of blood cancer patients travel across the country to the Texas Medical Center every year for lifesaving treatments, only to face financial ruin due to housing and medical costs. The Halo House Foundation provides a vital lifeline with affordable, temporary housing for these patients and their families as they receive months of treatment at the Texas Medical Center. The combination of treatment costs, medications, transportation, and temporary housing lead to depleted savings and insurmountable debt. Halo House Foundation strives to address critical gaps in basic needs for blood cancer patients and their families. Today, our foundation has 33 fully furnished apartments for just $25 per day. Since the official opening in 2011, our 42,500-square-foot facility has provided more than 92,000 nights of housing. Our mission addresses the critical need for housing, transportation for health services, meals, and community programs. We are committed to ensuring our residents have access to nutritious meals without financial burden, allowing them to focus on healing. We proudly partner with Second Servings, a Houston-based organization dedicated to alleviating hunger, reducing food waste, and providing fresh, nutritious meals to underserved populations. By rescuing surplus food and delivering it directly to charitable meal sites, Second Servings helps us serve weekly groceries at no cost and provide wholesome, prepared meals at our community events. Additionally, we are the only housing facility in the state that provides fully equipped kitchens in each apartment. Each apartment is stocked with cookware, linens, and towels. Our facility features a gym, chapel, outdoor area, and a cafeteria. We create not just a house, but a home. The goal is to create a sense of support through community programs and a sense of normalcy during such a challenging time. Our free shuttle service operates 12 hours a day, five days a week, providing seamless transportation and alleviating the high parking costs at TMC, which often exceed $20 per visit. Our Story: Derek, diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 26, found himself unable to work during treatment while facing frequent, extended stays in the Texas Medical Center. The financial strain quickly exhausted his family's savings, bringing to light the heavy economic toll that treatment imposes on patients. During a conversation with his physician, Dr. Fowler, Derek said, “I’m not afraid of dying. I’m afraid of leaving my family bankrupt if I do.” Inspired by this moment, Dr. Fowler (a former oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center) founded Halo House to address this critical gap in patient services. Since its inception, the foundation has grown from an idea into a lifesaving support system. Despite our efforts, the demand for affordable lodging continues to rise, with over 168 families on our waitlist.
