Mission Statement
826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.
About This Cause
Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning, self-confidence, and self-efficacy can happen with individual attention, and that strong literacy and writing skills are fundamental to future success. 826CHI encourages the exploration of endless possibilities through the power of writing for students, their teachers, and their communities. 826CHI cultivates over 3,600 young local authors annually through our core programs: After-School Writing Lab, Workshops, Field Trips, and In-School Projects, and amplify the impact of students’ words by publishing and distributing their writing across the city. 826CHI holds strong and active values of equity and inclusion and employs a priority enrollment statement to ensure that our programs and services are reaching students, families, and communities most impacted by systemic disinvestment in high-quality arts and literacy education. We prioritize students who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse, and English Language Learners. We strive to create a safe and welcoming environment for students to be their full, creative selves, build their confidence in their writing, and affirm their experiences and the stories that they desire to tell. By transforming students into innovators and media makers through our writing and publishing processes, 826CHI pushes the boundary of the singular narrative. Not only do students use the literary arts to envision new possibilities, but they also watch their ideas come to life in the form of a publication. We strategically foster confidence levels, determination, and the perceived ability to succeed in other areas of life.
