CASA ESPERANZA PROJECT

Chicago, Illinois, 60617-2427 United States

Mission Statement

The mission of Casa Esperanza is to establish mutual respect among all people, so that the absolute value of every human being, especially the poor and the neediest is recognized. Thus, the Casa Esperanza Project was started as a means to restore and support the dignity of homeless persons, especially women and children and to enable them to fulfill their human potential.

About This Cause

The Casa Esperanza Project serves homeless women and children as they transition from shelters into a more independent and self-sustaining live style. The Society of Helpers, a Roman Catholic order of women religious, began this project in 1995 and has a 501(C) 3 designation. The project is located at 8801 S. Saginaw Avenue in Chicago. The decision to begin this project in the community known as South Chicago was in direct response to the growing poverty, homelessness and domestic violence that many minority women and children experience in South Chicago. Casa Esperanza Project is not a shelter. It is much more than just temporary housing and functions under the supervision of the Society of Helpers whose administrative staff consists of an executive director and program coordinator. The program staff have also supervised interns from local colleges and universities who play an essential role in identifying community resources. Casa Esperanza Project provides onsite case management, employment skill training, life skills, parent coaching and referrals to other resources. Now celebrating over 29 years of service, Casa Esperanza Project has supported the transformation of over 100 women and 30 children. This shared housing project serves as a bridge between shelter living and permanent housing while the single parent obtains the necessary training that enables her to achieve the skills to become independent and maintain her own household. This project specifically targets homeless women who begin to demonstrate the ability to live independently and have the desire and motivation for bettering their life situation through education and/or job training.
