Mission Statement
Habitat for Humanity Detroit’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Our mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.
About This Cause
Habitat for Humanity is one of the most recognized and well-regarded brands in the world. More importantly the HFH model remains unique despite the proliferation of other non-profits who provide homes and/or home repair to low-income individuals. Some organizations give away homes or home repair services. This does not address the underlying causes of poverty which make it difficult for some low income individuals to qualify for a home loan in the first place. Habitat “sells” homes rather than give them away and it does so only after homebuyers have been vetted through an application process, have completed financial literacy training, home-buyer counseling, and “sweat equity” volunteer hours working on their homes and other projects. HFHD’s goal is to apply this same approach to an expanded array of programs and services. Instead of a “hand-out,” we offer a “hand up.” While more and more news stories praise Detroit for its turnaround and renewed prosperity, this comeback has been largely confined to Midtown and the downtown business district, leaving Detroit’s older and traditional neighborhoods and residents untouched by the area’s recent prosperity. These often-times ignored neighborhoods have become unattractive for redevelopment due to a high percentage of abandoned houses and related blight problems. Redevelopment is not happening in many of these neighborhoods, and as a result, entry-level affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization is lacking. A world where everyone has an opportunity to have a safe, affordable and decent place to call home.
