Mission Statement
PreventEd works to reduce or prevent the harms of alcohol and other drug use through education, intervention and advocacy.
About This Cause
MIsuse of alcohol and drugs is America's #1 public health crisis. Founded in 1965, we are a $3.7 million community health agency providing the following programs and services annually to more than 100,000 people residing in the City of St. Louis and St. Louis, St. Charles, Jefferson, Franklin, Lincoln and Warren Counties. - Evidence-informed, research-based substance use prevention education and leadership training to school-aged youth; - Science-based information about substance use disorders to the public and decision-makers; - No-cost professional assessments of adolescents for possible substance use problems; - No-cost transitional counseling for adolescents who use substances or youth at risk, and referrals to treatment when indicated; and - Advocacy activities that increase public awareness of substance misuse issues and that support effective public policy solutions. More than 80% of our services are delivered to individuals less than 18 years of age. We are the largest provider of school-based substance use prevention programming; last year, we delivered our curricula to more than 80,000 K-12 students in more than 280 area schools. Misuse of alcohol and other drugs damages health, destroys lives, tears families apart, and burdens taxpayers and communities with heavy costs for health care, law enforcement, courts and corrections. Our need to reach young people is well-considered and urgent: statewide, 17,000 12- to 17-year olds have a substance use disorder (Missouri Substance Abuse Intervention and Treatment Programs, 2016) that, on average, began before the age of 14. According to the 2014 Missouri Student Survey, by the time adolescents in our seven-county region reach 12th grade, 1 in 2 will have consumed alcohol, 1 in 3 will have used marijuana, and 1 in 10 will have misused a prescription drug (the most direct precursor to use of heroin). The young are especially susceptible to developing substance dependencies and use disorders because of the brain's developmental lag in areas associated with risk assessment, thrill-seeking and decision-making. NCADA programs rely on a mix of public and private support. We are a full member agency of the United Way of Greater St. Louis, and are recognized by a number of other accrediting agencies, most notably the Missouri Division of Behavioral Health and the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Missouri and Southern Illinois.
