About This Cause

Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder caused by a deficiency or defect of one of the proteins necessary for blood to properly clot. Hemophilia affects about 20,000 people in the United States, mostly males. It is incurable, and requires lifelong treatment. Without proper treatment, hemophilia can be life threatening. Sadly, it is one of the most expensive chronic disorders to treat. Von Willebrand Disease is a hereditary bleeding disorder characterized by bleeding from mucous membranes (e.g. mouth, nose, throat, gastrointestinal tract) and skin surfaces. Excessive bruising, nose bleeds, heavy menstrual cycles and excessive bleeding following extraction of teeth or tonsils are the most common symptoms of von Willebrand Disease. Von Willebrand disease affects both males and females equally. This condition can be more complicated for women because of obstetrics and gynecological issues.
