Project Details

Hurricane Matthew 2016 left the southern island of Ile a Vache and other communities in Haiti with thousands dead and many without fresh water. Wells are contaminated or destroyed, all rooftop cisterns were destroyed.

International Rescue Group (IRG) is using boats in the weeks after emergencies to bring reverse osmosis desalinators to pump fresh drinking water to coastal and island communities, plus other skills with volunteers to help dig and decontaminate wells. We have one boat there in Haiti still producing 6,000 litres of pure water per day after months and that is still not enough for 15,000 people, UN reports call for a minimum of 2 litres per person drinking water. We need generators and ability to install and maintain portable land-based units.

We have the experience and connections with the major NGOs such as Red Cross and UN. Getting financial help from them is notoriously difficult and a multi-year project, though we supported the Red Cross during the 2015 disaster on Dominica after Tropical Storm Erika - in this ongoing Haiti disaster three IRG boats have reached Haiti and are the only ones producing drinking water after over 4 months. It is still not enough, but fortunately we are helping to re-establish the island's infrastructure,

To expand this operation in the region, we need $50,000 to buy more watermakers, generators, well drills and pumps and fund the infrastructure to make them available to relief locations in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. IRG already has bases and support in Florida, southern Haiti and eastern Mexico.

IRG is entirely an unpaid volunteer-based organization and has three wholly-owned operational boats and competent retired captains plus one US Veteran establishing a new boat in the region plus the IRG Reserve network of many cruising yachts who can be called on to support as volunteers.
