Mission Statement
Kids Five & Over is an all-volunteer local nonprofit helping children in challenging economic circumstances explore their unique interests and passions. We aim to sustain programming so all children can thrive.
About This Cause
Kids Five & Over (K50) helps youth in challenging economic circumstances discover and nurture their unique interests and talents. These important touch points offer positive socialization, promote organic friendships, increase mentorship, and tighten the circle of community and support. We are different from traditional camp-funding organizations in that we focus on fulfilling the expressed wishes of youth, one by one. Kids Five & Over operates in the geographical area encompassing Rockingham, Strafford, and York Counties, commonly referred to as the Piscataqua Region or Greater Seacoast. The level of financial need within these counties is evident in the 2022-23 data from the New Hampshire and Maine Departments of Education, specifically in the statistics for free and reduced lunch programs, which indicate that more than 11,500 youth are living at or below the federal poverty level. Key leaders from across the Seacoast (educators, administrators, outreach therapists, coaches, volunteers) are poised to notice when children need financial assistance to bridge the gap between interest and opportunity. These vital child advocates work directly with families to help identify the wants and wishes of youth and then submit nominations for sponsorship through our website. Kids Five & Over offers a sustained financial commitment to each child’s chosen activity so they can practice dedication, resilience, and tenacity - all while forming life-long friendships. Skill level is not part of the formula for awarding funding. We fund joy. In addition to sponsorship funding, we accept requests for peripheral needs (equipment, uniforms, shoes, etc.) since these expenses can often be out of reach for families. We want K50-sponsored youth to show up and blend in if that is their wish. In the pandemic years of 2020-21, the abrupt halt in social opportunities for youth of all socio-economic backgrounds highlighted the link between social/recreation and mental health. During this period, our mission gained both clarity and resonance among a broader audience. From 2020 to 2022, requests for sponsorships increased by 150%. In 2023, those requests leaped an additional 50%. Local youth need us now, more than ever.
