Mission Statement
Creating opportunities and inspiring children and youth in the Salinas Valley through visual and multicultural arts education. We provide mentorship and help young people develop artistic and life skills while embracing their cultural identities.
About This Cause
In East Salinas, an area in the lowest quartile of the California Healthy Places Index, Hijos del Sol addresses critical community issues by offering a safe haven for youth to express themselves creatively and foster emotional well-being. Our name, "Children of the Sun," reflects our philosophy of interconnectedness and sharing. We are celebrating 30 years of impactful programming since our establishment in 1994 by Native American and Latino migrant artists. The community and officials have recognized our contributions. Our Experimental Arts Studio, located at 443 East Alisal St, East Salinas, is open five days a week and free to all participants. Programs Offered: 1) Experimental Arts Studio: HDS’s Experimental Arts Atudio (virtual tour here) is open five days a week, free, and welcoming to all. It is located at 443 East Alisal St, East Salinas. 2) Traveling Experimental Arts Studio: Bringing art experiences to various locations. Pop-Up Experimental Arts Workshops: Temporary art sessions in different community spaces. 3) Community-produced Murals: Collaborative public art projects. 4) Apprenticeships / Social Enterprises: Providing professional experience and opportunities. 5) Cultural Events with Arts Exhibits: Showcasing local talent and cultural heritage. 6) Signature Events: Including Día de Muertos, A Toda Madre, and Garabatos.
