Houston Furniture Bank Overview The Furniture Assistance office and warehouse at the Houston Furniture Bank Main Campus is located at 8220 Mosley Road near Hobby Airport. At this 75,000 sq. ft. location furniture distribution operates as the core of Making Empty Houses Homes. In 2023 a total of 21,093 pieces of furniture were distributed to families and individuals who visited with their caseworkers and selected furniture for their homes. A second furniture distribution location, The Furniture Bank Fort Bend County, opened in November 2023 to serve the greater Fort Bend County area. No Kids on the Floor Program began in 2019 as a unique program providing twin mattresses to thousands of children in the Houston area. The initiative was launched and is operating to ensure that no child sleeps on the floor and receives essential sleep and rest needed for growth and learning by providing twin mattress sets to children in need. Donations will facilitate much-needed dollars to buy raw materials to manufacture twin mattresses to increase distribution and ensure children do not sleep on the floor in the greater Houston area. According to recent reports, one in five Texas children live in poverty, and Black and Hispanic children are disproportionately likely to live below the poverty line. Poverty rates for families with children headed by single mothers (38%) are twice as high as they are for families with children headed by single fathers (19%). Families with children living in poverty pose significant additional challenges for children's well-being as they struggle to meet basic needs. The Houston Furniture Bank gives hope to these families by providing twin mattresses, foundations, and bed frames to ensure no child sleeps on the floor through the No Kids on the Floor Program. A good night’s sleep is essential for children. Studies show children who regularly get an adequate amount of sleep have improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, and overall mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, and depression. In 2023 a total of 849 twin mattresses were distributed to children in need. Each $250 donated to the No Kids on the Floor Program provides a new twin mattress, foundation, and bed frame to a child in need. We invite you to collaborate with the Houston Furniture Bank to bring compassion and hope to children living in poverty. Every dollar donated will have a significant impact on a child’s life and future. The Furniture Outlet at the Houston Furniture Bank helps fund operations through furniture and furnishings sales. Proceeds are directed toward the cost of operations to distribute furniture to the needy. The Furniture Outlet is open to the public Monday-Saturday, 8-5 p.m., and added items are displayed every day! Mattress Manufacturing builds quality mattresses in-house at the Houston Furniture Bank. This program began in 2017 to meet the need after Hurricane Harvey and builds mattresses for Furniture Assistance and twin mattresses for our No Kids on the Floor Program. Mattress Recycling program is onsite in the warehouse and allows the Houston Furniture Bank to do its part to protect the environment. As of July 2020, a total of 100,000 mattresses have been recycled by the Houston Furniture Bank since the program began in 2012. Mattresses donated torn, damaged, or not in good condition are recycled. A spring mattress will take 80-120 years to decompose in a landfill. The recycling program is helping preserve the environment by keeping the mattresses out of landfills and the chemicals used to compose foam/fibers from seeping into the ground and our water supply. Currently, six employees are with the Second Chance Employment Program changing perceptions, rebuilding their lives, and stopping recidivism. The power of Second Chance Employment is helping the employee and the public realize the potential of the formerly incarcerated and the power of a job to create a positive impact in our workplaces, our communities, and our society. In summary, the Houston Furniture Bank has created projects, programs, employment opportunities, and services to build integrity and trust in the Houston community and especially in the many disadvantaged clients served daily. Our focus is to provide furniture and mattresses to each family in need with utmost respect and compassion. Thank you for your time and attention.
