Milaan is a non-profit organization that envisions a world where every young person has the opportunity, agency and well-being to thrive.
About This Cause
For over 17 years, Milaan Foundation has designed and implemented girl-led, girl-focused leadership programs internationally, with a strong focus on advancing gender equality and empowering girls as community leaders from historically, socially, and economically marginalized communities in India. Milaan’s flagship program launched in 2015, the Girl Icon program identifies and supports adolescent girls from marginalized communities across India to become leaders and agents of change. In Uganda, Milaan is piloting the Girl Icon program in partnership with Surge for Water and Prince of Peace Widows and Orphans in the Kaberamaido and Kalaki districts of rural Uganda. In the U.S., Milaan Foundation is piloting The Becoming Initiative, a yearlong hybrid leadership program designed to help youth build leadership, confidence, and emotional resilience. Rooted in Positive Youth Development and Social-Emotional Learning, it empowers youth to become purposeful leaders equipped to navigate challenges and create meaningful change. In addition to the Girl Icon Program and The Becoming Initiative, Milaan Foundation has launched: The Swarachna School in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, founded in 2007, provides quality education to over 760 first-generation learners. Beyond academics, it fosters community development by instilling values of self-belief, empathy, and leadership. In 2021, Swarachna established a free girls' hostel to support students at risk of dropping out due to the COVID-19 pandemic, now housing 70 girls (grades 6-12). Inspired by the concept of “Stronger Together”, Milaan actively collaborates with like-minded organizations and is an active participant of the Girl’s Opportunity Alliance by Obama Foundation. Milaan has a gold certification in compliance by Guide Star India and is supported by gender sector-leading organizations such as Edelgive Foundation, Ford Foundation, Girl Rising, etc. Our work is built on the unwavering belief that systemic change is not just necessary; it is within reach. By investing in the youth today, we are shaping a more just and equitable tomorrow.
