About This Cause

Sistercare is a private, nonprofit, United Way partner organization serving battered women and their children in Richland, Lexington, Fairfield, Kershaw and Newberry counties in South Carolina. Service Phone Line: A 24-hour, 7 days-a-week hotline is available for individuals in need of domestic violence services, crisis intervention, referrals, and information. Emergency Shelters: Three shelters in Richland and Lexington counties are available for battered women and their children who need a safe place to stay. The shelter offers a nonjudgmental atmosphere where women can escape violence and plan for the future. Support groups, individual counseling, court advocacy, financial literacy, parenting groups, referrals to increase self-sufficiency, room, meals, laundry facilities, clothing and more are provided. Community Counseling Services: Support groups are offered for battered women in each county we serve. Domestic violence survivors help one another through group discussion, receive support in dealing with intimate partner violence, and learn of options and resources available to them. Individual counseling is provided for battered women who live outside of our shelters. Court Advocacy: Services are provided by Court Advocates to inform battered women about the legal process and options available to them to protect their rights. Advocates help domestic violence victims obtain legal services, assist them in the completion of paperwork, accompany them to court, and advocate for protection through the judicial system. (Sistercare Advocates are not attorneys and cannot dispense legal advice.) Children’s Services: Counseling is provided for children who reside in our shelters as well as for children who live in the community to help them address the effects of domestic violence and trauma on their lives. Post-Shelter Follow Up Program: When battered women and their children leave our shelters and return to the community, Follow Up Advocates provide ongoing support services to ensure they maintain their goal of living a violence-free life in which they take responsibility for themselves and their children. Rural Services: Satellite offices with advocates are maintained in Fairfield, Kershaw and Newberry counties where support groups, counseling, court advocacy, information and referral, and support services are provided for battered women and their children. Transitional Housing: Families from our shelters and community-based programs are transitioned to community housing where they receive intensive services to help them become economically independent and remain free of the abusive relationship. Community Education and Awareness: Presentations are offered by a Sistercare trainer to victim service providers, volunteers and the community on the issues of domestic violence, Sistercare and our services. A volunteer speaker’s bureau is available to address civic, faith-based and professional organizations to raise awareness and understanding of interpersonal violence and Sistercare’s services.
