Mission Statement
Alleviate the suffering of our island’s animals by providing temporary shelter, finding forever homes, offering spay-neuter services and a low-cost veterinary clinic for our community.
About This Cause
The Vieques Humane Society, established in 1987, is the only animal shelter on the island municipality of Vieques, Puerto Rico. It provides shelter for abused, abandoned, and neglected animals, provides low-cost spay and neuter surgery for owned and feral animals, and provides reasonable cost veterinary services for owned animals. The shelter adopts approximately 400 dogs and cats each year. Ninety percent of these adoptions occur in the United States and the animals are transported via airplane to their forever homes. The Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue is committed to the following philosophy and goals: • To improve the welfare and alleviate the suffering of all Vieques animals through medical services, humane education, and advocacy. • To reduce the population of unwanted animals through low cost sterilization and public education. • To provide refuge and adoption for stray, relinquished and abused animals.
