Mission Statement
TARC is committed to ensuring a high quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families through education, empowerment, support, and advocacy. TARC believes that people with disabilities are entitled to dignity and respect that empowerment is the most effective way to help them achieve their dreams. TARC envisions a world in which these individuals have a right to make their own choices and their voices are reflected in all decisions affecting their lives.
About This Cause
In 1952, TARC was established by parents of children with developmental disabilities because of their frustration with the lack of services available to their children. These founding families passionately advocated for services and supports and it is their passion that infuses the organization today. Since that beginning more than 60 years ago, TARC has worked to improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities such as intellectual disabilities, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, and autism spectrum disorders. TARC remains as committed today to fostering the well-being, dignity, and rights of people with developmental disabilities and their families as did those pioneering parents who founded the organization in 1952. There are more than 5,000 people with developmental disabilities receiving community services through the Home and Community Based waiver or other state funded sources from the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (OKDHS). Currently there are more than 7000 individuals on a waiting list to hopefully obtain state waivered services. TARC endeavors to advocate, educate and empower individuals within the I/DD community (those diagnosed with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities). Our services assist family members with gaining a greater knowledge of services and policies that affect the care of their loved ones. TARC also contracts with the State of Oklahoma to provide oversight of individuals currently receiving waivers services to ensure that they maintain the highest quality of life possible. For the past 24 years, TARC has conducted a night-time golf tournament as a major fundraising activity. Shot in the Dark is a unique tournament played at night with glow-in-the-dark balls and LED glow sticks marking tee boxes and holes. Golfers tee off in teams of four at a shotgun start. All holes are par three and golfers navigate the course playing nine holes. This year’s event is set for Friday, May 3rd at Meadowbrook Country Club in South Tulsa, 9300 E. 81st St., Tulsa. All proceeds support TARC programs and services helping individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, with needs such as special education assistance, multi-age support groups, self-advocacy, social skills training, and grief and loss support.
