Mission Statement

The mission of the Texas Academic Decathlon is to encourage, recognize, and reward academic teams and individual students through region, state, and national academic competition.

About This Cause

Academic Decathlon was created to provide opportunities for students to experience the challenges of rigorous team and individual competition. Each student competes in ten events – art, economics, essay, interview, literature, math, music, science, social science, and speech. A new theme of study is established every year with topics that are relevant and challenging. The ten-event academic program strives to foster a greater respect for knowledge, to promote wholesome inter-school academic competition, and to further develop student communication skills. A unique aspect of academic decathlon is that it is designed to include students from all academic abilities. Each nine-member team consists of three “Honor,” three “Scholastic,” and three “Varsity” students. Texas also has three school divisions based on UIL classifications – Large (6A), Medium (5A), and Small (4A-1A). Competitors go head to head against other students in their same classifications; i.e., medium school “B” students compete against other medium school “B” students ONLY. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded for individual events and total scores. Overall individual winners are recognized as well as champion teams.
