Mission Statement
Build a pipeline of minority youth for STEM/technology careers.
About This Cause
A 501(c)3 organization that develops extraordinary minority youth for STEM careers. BYOC is a non-profit program which has a goal to change the game and make the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana Tri-State area the largest technological training hub for minority youth in the country. BYOC is a motivating and energizing experience that transforms the life and career trajectories for many campers. BYOC’s mission is to create a pipeline of minority youth for lucrative tech careers, igniting a passion for technology. We start at age 9 go through high school. Youth and their parents come to see that computer science is attainable and is fun. BYOC has compelling programs and activities, unlike other training programs of its kind. Our students specialize in all forms of computer technology. BYOC teaches how to build a computer, coding, circuitry, robotics and more. We compliment regular school curriculums preparing students to excel in school. Our curriculum bridges sports, music, medicine, finance and many other disciplines through applications of technology. BYOC Camps and Clubs had a record year in 2022 starting with exceeding its goal of 100 youth in the summer classes. There were 117 youth in classes during the summer and 10 youth in classes during the winter and fall. For the first time BYOC awarded 48 scholarships and worked with 13 communities across Greater Cincinnati. Communities included: Avondale, Bond Hill, Monfort Heights, College Hill, Price Hill, Walnut Hills, Lincoln Heights, Forest Park, Deer Park, Batavia, Anderson, Springdale, and Lockland. In addition, 4 youth from other states participated in person this summer: North Carolina, Michigan, Louisiana and New Mexico. In the past BYOC has had youth participate that were visiting family from out of state but this was the first year that 3 of those 4 youth came to Cincinnati for the sole purpose of participating in BYOC. In 2021 there was 1 youth who came from Missouri. BYOC provided bus transportation across Greater Cincinnati for all 8 weeks at no additional charge. This was an important milestone because transportation has been a barrier for many participating in the summer program. 90 people attended the graduation with many families and friends celebrating the achievements of these students. BYOC ended the year of a very high note with the 1st Youth Tech Explosion Summit on December 17, 2022. Over 100 youth and parents spent all day with universities (University of Cincinnati – Business College and Kentucky State U.), businesses and experts from Oracle, General Electric, Losant, Hewlett Packard and others in discussions and workshops about technology. Participants got hands on experiences with technology. Youth had the opportunity to engage with IT professionals and educators to find out more about technology and through the workshops to experience different technologies first hand. The sessions were moderated by BYOC Youth Leaders. LaMarque’ Ward of Dream Builders University was the Keynote speaker. 96% of those who answered BYOC’s survey said the event was very helpful. Other feedback received about the conference included comments like “great event” and “we learned a lot”. New relationships were developed and insights into tech skills were shared. Plans for 2023 are already underway with fundraisers planned in April and more summits in the fall. Winter classes started in Jan 2023 and the summer starts in June 2023.
