Mission Statement

Our Mission is to ensure that every child whose parent is diagnosed with cancer is given the early tools and emotional support to cope. Our Vision imagines a world where preventing the inevitable psychosocial impact on children whose parents have cancer is taken as seriously as finding a cure for cancer itself. Our Goal is to have the CLIMB® Program operating in every cancer center in the US by 2030 and in as many international cancer centers as possible.

About This Cause

The Children’s Treehouse Foundation is a non-profit organization based in Denver, Colorado with the mission of improving psychosocial adjustment in children, ages 5 through 18, who have a parent or grandparent with cancer. The Children's Treehouse Foundation has created a research-based, psychosocial intervention, group-support program called CLIMB®- Children's Lives Include Moments of Bravery. CLIMB® helps to normalize feelings of sadness, anxiety, fear and anger for the kids and stimulates improved communication between the children and their parents. CLIMB® is the only group-based, manualized, and internationally delivered intervention that has been developed specifically for children with a parent or caregiver with cancer. The Children’s Treehouse Foundation trainsoncology social workers, child life specialists, nurses and other oncology professionals at cancer centers internationally to deliver our program. Our model - training oncology professionals that are already in cancer centers and already working with cancer patients with children – means we are highly scalable and have rapidly established an international footprint. Founded in January of 2001 by Peter van Dernoot, the CLIMB® Program is now available in 56 cancer centers in the U.S. and 26 additional centers in 5 other countries. We have trained 420 oncology professionals since we began and CLIMB® serves an estimated 1560 children representing almost 500 families every year. In 2020, both the training for oncology professionals and the groups for children and teens were moved online.
