Mission Statement

Discovering the joys of learning, play, and community. The Santa Fe Children’s Museum builds upon a child’s sense of joy and discovery by cultivating habits of inquiry in the arts, sciences, and humanities.

About This Cause

The Santa Fe Children's Museum, a non-profit organization, was incorporated in 1985 as the first children's museum in the state of New Mexico and was founded by four local educators, Ellyn Feldman, Ellen Biderman, Londi Carbajal, and Susan McIntosh. The founders perceived a need for learning opportunities in the community that would be distinctly different from those provided in school or home settings our founders sought to create a dynamic, hands-on, exploratory environment that included ample opportunity for social interactions. In 1989, the Museum took up residence at its current location on Old Pecos Trail, and its grand opening was attended with over 2,000 enthusiastic supporters. Now, 37 years later, it remains the only organization of its kind in the region and has played a vital role in the lives of countless children and families throughout Northern New Mexico. The mission of the Santa Fe Children's Museum is discovering the joys of learning, play, and community. The Museum provides a progressive and informal environment comprised of high-quality exhibits, weekly facilitated programs, and collaborative community events; all of which encourage active participation in the developmental process. As an institution, the Museum proudly serves as a hub within the community where children can safely test their potential, indulge their imaginations, and engage in behaviors that bolster confidence in themselves and the world around them. The Museum's 5,200 sq. ft. exhibit floor and 1.5-acre outdoor Earthworks Garden houses over 35 interactive exhibits and play structures, themed gardens, and live animal displays. Pre-Covid, weekly and monthly facilitated programs included Wee Wednesday for Early Childhood, Firefighter Story Time, Children's Model Train Club, Seeds and Sprouts, Science Saturdays, and Fine Art Fridays. The Museum hosts several special events throughout the year including events such as Earth Day with garden and arts-based activities, Winter Solstice featuring drum and dance performances, stargazing, a farolito labyrinth, and a Family Art Night, bringing families together to create a variety of visual arts. The Museum ensures Access for All as we honor, celebrate, and interweave the multicultural heritage so unique to New Mexico. By introducing children to the joy of discovery, learning, and community, we shift their perceptions and ignite learning habits that last lifelong. The Children’s Museum environment facilitates what’s missing in young kid’s lives today – encouragement of fine and gross motor skills, opportunities to manipulate to discover, and no rules or roadmaps to follow, with lots of creativity and variety. Kids can create their art. They can blow bubbles. They can climb and make their way through a tunnel. This type of unstructured play establishes healthy growth, interest in hobbies, and activities outside of school and creates a pathway for academic and personal success.
