Mission Statement

To enrich life through story. In particular, we seek ways to share stories and approaches to storytelling that reflect Black people’s full humanity.

About This Cause

We engage in charitable activities that increase access to stories and the craft of storytelling; particularly stories that reflect Black people’s full humanity. These activities include, but are not limited to creating and sharing stories in various media; preparing and offering physical, online, and digital educational materials and other content; providing spaces to engage in story creation or learning; and maintaining buildings, monuments, or other works that help tell stories of people, places, or cultures. Our initial focus is spaces, programming, and materials to help preserve and activate the legacy of the self-proclaimed “Unusual Artist” Ms. L.V. Hull from Kosciusko, Mississippi. These efforts include working with other charitable partners to develop the first public visual arts complex in Kosciusko, MS: the L.V. Hull Legacy Center; preserving her home as both a historic site and a space for future programming; creating and offering exhibitions about Ms. Hull; hosting talks, community events, and other programming related to her art, life, and legacy; and providing community screenings of documentaries about both Ms. Hull and other self-taught artists and environment creators. These charitable activities benefit members of the public of all ages in the following ways: sharing the power of stories to enrich our lives, help us find meaning, and foster a sense of oneness that invites empathy and counters prejudice and discrimination; teaching people how to capture, tell, or create stories; helping people access their own creativity; promoting appreciation for art; educating society about the art and life of L.V. Hull; and providing spaces for community activities and togetherness, while also offering opportunities for respite and quiet reflection. Often, the homes of African American artists do not survive, so our preservation efforts related to Ms. Hull’s home, in particular, help ensure a more accurate history of art and life in both the South and America as a whole. These publicly accessible spaces, programs, and materials are core to our exempt purpose. All the organization’s time is dedicated to these activities, and the activities are primarily funded through donations from the general public and grants. We may also receive other public support from governmental sources (e.g., state or local government). The Board members are volunteers, and they do not receive compensation.
