Mission Statement
Chrysalis serves people navigating barriers to the workforce by offering a job-readiness program, individualized supportive services, and paid transitional employment. We empower our clients on their pathway to stability, security, and fulfillment in their work lives. We envision a community in which everbody has the opportunity to work and thrive.
About This Cause
Our centers in Downtown Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Pacoima, Anaheim, South LA, and the Inland Empire are supported by a staff of 250 and a dedicated volunteer base of over 200 community members who help provide our program. Chrysalis was founded in 1984 to help individuals who were experiencing homelessness on Skid Row. Our founders soon learned that many people wanted to find work, to break the cycle of poverty. Since that time, Chrysalis has worked with the private sector to prepare individuals experiencing barriers to employment and match them to employment opportunities. Chrysalis has provided wrap-around services, employment training, job search, and job retention services for over 77,000 individuals, since our inception 38 years ago. We have also been a job-creator. In 1991, Chrysalis launched Chrysalis Enterprises (CE), what is now a recognized model of employment social enterprise. The first business created was Chrysalis Staffing, contracting with employers to provide work training and temporary work experience for our clients. A second social enterprise, Chrysalis Works, was established in 1994 and employs clients in street maintenance jobs in Los Angeles County. Since 2016, Chrysalis Roads, a partnership with Caltrans, the City of Los Angeles, and the Butte County Office of Education has employed people with justice system involvement in transitional employment with Caltrans while they also receive job search, retention, and therapeutic services. Our newest CE business, Chrysalis Safekeeping, provides housekeeping services at permanent and transitional housing facilities serving formerly homeless individuals, as well as safe storage for people experiencing homelessness at locations across Los Angeles.
