Host a fundraiser such as a virtual supply drive to raise funds for Science Club for Girls!

Each semester, SCFG runs FREE, hands-on Science Clubs for over 350 girls from underrepresented backgrounds in the Greater Boston area. We rely on companies, individuals, and foundations to support our mission financially so we can keep all our programs free and accessible to our community. Hosting a (virtual) fundraiser/ supply drive at your company is a great way to support our mission of inspiring the next generation of diverse girls and women to succeed in STEM education and careers!

SCFG staff can help set up your online fundraiser (including concrete examples of what your group will help fund, such as purchasing specific supplies for that semester's clubs) and if available, may speak to your group about our organization and its impact on the girls who participate.

For more information on hosting a fundraiser or supply drive, contact Director of Development Lucy Sweeney at lsweeney@scienceclubforgirls.org.

“An estimated 13.5 million children in this country, or approximately 20% of U.S. children under age 18 years of age, have a special health care need” (National Survey of Children’s Health. (2020), leaving a lot of parents doubling as caregivers. Caring for oneself enables a parent to provide better care to the children who depend on them. Night Lights provides valuable time away so that parents can refuel and nurture an overall sense of wellbeing.

Night Lights provides respite care to families who have children (ages 4 weeks - 12 years) with special needs and their siblings (also ages 4 weeks to 12 years) at no cost to the families. Thanks to the generosity of the community, Night Lights has provided over 67,000 hours of free respite care to families of children with special needs and their neuro-typical siblings over the last ten years, a service that would cost the state over $1.2 million if Colorado were to provide respite vouchers for every family that Night Lights serves.

The Childcare Volunteer stays with the child throughout the evening during each month’s program, taking them from one activity to another. The purpose of this position is to provide a one-on-one care position between the child and the volunteer. This volunteer is expected to interact with the child with excitement, love and respect. The Childcare Volunteer will document the events of the evening in the child’s file, as well as communicate with the Leadership Team regarding any concerns or questions they have about the child. The volunteers are trained and background checked. No experience is necessary and this is not a therapy position of any sort. There is an onsite nurse to assist with all medical issues.

Training shouldn't have to be boring. And even if learning something (like reading assembly or network packet traces) requires extensive repetition, if it's going to be a grind, we should find a way to make it a fun grind, like in games. Acquiring new skills on OST2 naturally lends itself to an RPG-like experience, as students spend time to gain XP, collect tools to make their lives easier, and level up their technical skills as they climb our skill trees. But what we need is some way to visualize all the progress that a student is making as they go through classes, which is otherwise invisible and abstract. We need a way to visualize their inventory of tools or their current skill level with debuggers or sniffers or configuration managers.

In this role, you'd help us expose and visualize the personal progress that everyone achieves when they go through classes on OST2. You won't be expected to make full videogames or anything like that. We need to start small and utilize existing technologies for things like Mozilla OpenBadges, and provide nicer integrations with Open EdX's admittedly immature gamification efforts. Or we need to find ways to collect and share character attributes like "Debugger Level 2" in Open EdX profiles, and then combine them with formal skill trees which show students what classes they can take to level up in particular skills.

If you're interested in volunteering in this capacity, email us at gamez@ost2.fyi.

Each year, thousands of people across the country join the Bike MS volunteer team. Volunteers make Bike MS happen and are the foundation of why Bike MS is the largest cycling fundraising event in the country.

Families, corporate groups, and individuals of all ages and abilities are welcome to volunteer. We are always looking for youth clubs, corporate and service-oriented community groups to lend a hand before, during and after our events. You do not have to be a cyclist or know anything about cycling to be a valuable volunteer!

When you volunteer, you become part of the MS movement – a community of passionate individuals working together to create a world free of MS. Together we provide support, have fun and make a difference for the nearly 1 million people living with MS in the United States.

The National MS Society is seeking enthusiastic and responsible volunteers to work at our Bike MS: Waves to Wine event on Saturday, September 18 & 19th! This is a two day bike ride where our participants will ride up to 160 miles through the bay area while raising funds to support those living with MS. We need volunteers to help support our Riders as they participate in this fantastic event!

If you are interested and want to learn more the event's volunteer roles please contact Harmeet Bath, at harmeet.bath@nmss.org.
