Our English program focuses on offering all members of our community an opportunity to learn English as a second language. Given the fact that the community of Cabarete is a popular tourist destination, it is of great value to speak English in order to acquire a stable and quality job that leads to increased income levels. Our English teachers have the opportunity to offer academic and conversational courses to children, adolescents, and adults in the community. The classroom levels taught (basic, intermediate, advanced) vary depending on the needs and prior language knowledge of participants.

Position Summary:
The DREAM ESL intern will assist the DREAM Project in holding regular community ESL courses during the academic year. The intern will use currently available ESL curriculum as well as develop their own lessons in order to best fit the specific program in which they are teaching and the community they are serving. The ESL intern will work alongside one of our program or volunteer coordinators to manage the ESL program.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Teach a series of weekly ESL courses to a variety of community members (children, adolescents, and adults), with instructional level dependent on community needs and prior language knowledge of participants.
• Lead teacher in A Ganar Young Adult Workforce Training Program (youth aged 18 – 24)
• Develop new lesson plans and adapt current ESL curriculum materials.
• Coordinate the logistics of offering ESL classes in various DREAM communities.
• Manage basic administrative tasks such as keeping student records, supervising enrollment process, designing promotional materials, and identifying opportunities to expand the reach of DREAM’s ESL program.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree (Fields of study in education, ESL, international development, or other related areas are desirable but not required).
• Basic to intermediate Spanish skills.
• Prior experience in teaching ESL in a classroom setting.
• High energy and positive attitude.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Prior experience working with diverse non-English speaking populations or in a developing country preferred.
• TEFL or TOEFL certification is helpful.

Interns commit to fundraising a specific amount to cover their expenses. Full fellowship is available for Dominican-Americans and experienced teachers. PPL Leaders in New Hope Elementary is a 1:1 tutoring and mentoring program for 7st-10th graders living in affordable housing. Opportunity Details

Currently, we have openings for our feral kitten tamers team. The tamers spend time with each kitten and teach them to trust humans. This involves providing holding, playing with, providing, food, medication, vaccinations and clean housing for each animal. These shifts are 5-6 hours per week. We have monthly orientations and a team leader who provides individual training. We have on-line train on topics such as animal care and husbandry.

Volunteers are the heart of One Degree. These mentors, ambassadors and teachers give up their free time to work with students that are quite often brushed aside in their communities or schools. In return for giving these young people direction and support, our volunteers experience first-hand what it means to make a tangible difference in the lives of students that may have been left behind otherwise.

What it takes:
Traditionally, our mentors are young professionals, but anyone who meets the following criteria is welcome to apply:

*Able to volunteer a minimum of one hour per month
*Patient, empathetic and considerate
*Comfortable with an online 1-on-1 mentoring environment

Important Note! While our mentoring often focuses on Maths and English academic support, you do NOT need exceptional skills in Maths or English, or previous mentoring or teaching experience to be a One Degree mentor.

Get training and logistical support so you (and your fellow STEM professionals!) can go directly into East Bay elementary and middle school classrooms to lead exciting STEM explorations. Serve as a mentor in a 6-week (once per week) middle school program; read Storytime with a Scientist books and lead activities with Kindergarteners; or help run a festival station at a Day of Science. We offer a range of volunteer opportunities to fit your schedule.

CHANGE A LIFE.
A small commitment of your time can make a big difference in a child’s life. Your time and attention can help a child feel special and important as well as help them plan for the future. Communities In Schools of Kent mentors provide children in the Kent School District with encouragement and guidance. A mentor serves as a mature and experienced role model and friend who supports and encourages success.

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?
Students are selected for the program based upon factors impacting their school performance, which may include limited positive adult role models, poor school attachment, a lack of direction or limited hope for the future. Often mentors follow their child as they progress from elementary to middle school to high school.

Mentors are matched with a child and meet them up to an hour a week during the school day. During this time, they do a variety of activities based upon the interests of the child and the mentor. The overall benefit of their time together comes from the developing friendship, which provides a boost in the child’s self-confidence, encouragement to achieve in school and life, and an opportunity to see more options for their future.

Interested community volunteers are invited to attend an orientation. Once they have decided to join the program, they are screened through a volunteer application process and complete mandatory training prior to being matched with a child.

Career Exploration Day connects our students’ dreams with a very real experience. By seeing what it looks like to work in the Silicon Valley, they are taking the first step in creating a personal vision for their success. Our students dream of being doctors, journalists, engineers, etc. While their dreams may change, it is important that every student meets individuals who are successful in their chosen profession.

What this entails:
• Hosting a group of 4-8 high school students from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The students will be accompanied at all times by a Breakthrough chaperone.
• Answering questions about your company, your job, and your educational experience.
• Taking them to lunch, either at your company cafeteria or order lunch to be eaten in a conference room or common area.
• Working with Breakthrough staff to plan a schedule of activities for the day.

What the students will do to prepare for Career Exploration Day:
• Research your company
• Brainstorm questions to ask you and other employees
• They are also asked to dress ‘business casual’ for the day

Schedule of Activities
A member of the Breakthrough staff will work with you to design a session for our students; some ideas and examples of what others have done are below. We want our students to meet people doing very different jobs if possible – engineering, human resources, operations, finance, legal; several high-achieving company hosts have even introduced kids to their CEO!

A Sample Schedule:
10:00 Students and chaperone(s) arrive; introductions or an ice-breaker, etc.
10:10 Students get a brief tour of the company
10:30 Meet with Employee A; learn about their job and their experience
10:45 Meet with Employee B; learn about their job and their experience
11:00 Participate in a group activity or continue meeting employees. Here are the types of group activities companies have done in the past:
 Anderson Brule Architects had the students design a living space
 Cisco had the students attend a teleconference meeting
 Deloitte had students role play being Financial Advisors
 Ubisoft had students test newly designed videogames
 The Mayor’s Office of San Jose had the students stage a mock council meeting
