Mission Statement
The mission of Respirar Comunidad is to build an inclusive life-sharing community based on the Camphill Movement, where neurodivergent adults can live a rich, purposeful, independent life in a rural farm setting. Productive activities will follow the principles of biodynamic agriculture. Community life will be participative and dynamic, self-governing and self-sustaining, striving to recognize and further develop each individual's unique talents and offering diverse opportunities for a rich social and cultural life. El Cauce | Camphill Escobar is our first large-scale community initiative.
About This Cause
Respirar Comunidad aims to create a new future for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Latin America. By developing communities that remove disabling barriers and focus on ABILITIES, we will establish a new paradigm that highlights the POTENTIAL of adults with IDD. We are adapting the proven Camphill model, founded in Scotland in 1939, to the local culture to offer a new format for inclusion and to inspire change. Our current project, El Cauce, is the first inclusive community initiative in Latin America, an integrated residential village and biodynamic farm where adults with and without IDD live and work together, collaborating in domestic tasks and working side-by-side on the farm and in adapted workshops. Biodynamic agriculture establishes a healthy daily and seasonal rhythm, regenerates the earth and vitalizes crops. Nourishing the land in turn nourishes the farmer, and this reciprocal relationship is intrinsic to Camphill. The needs of the earth provide context, individual talents define the tasks, and the health of the community is the common objective. El Cauce is an ambitious multi-phase project. In 2022 we secured our 30-hectare farm, debt-free, with innovative social financing. We have developed the basic infrastructure of a mixed-use farm, including a vegetable garden, laying hens, sheep, horses, cows and beehives. We renovated housing for our caretaker and volunteers, and recently completed our Community Center. We have installed solar energy, drilled wells and incorporated bio-digestors for wastewater. We host seasonal celebrations and programming for adults with IDD. We are ready to inaugurate our first life-sharing home and expand programming to demonstrate the power of inclusive community. El Cauce will grow organically, eventually home to 150 individuals in 10 houses and offering programs to the greater non-resident community. We will inspire and educate, establishing a replicable model that will expand throughout the region.
