Mission Statement
KYDS exists to reduce the impact of mental health and well being issues amongst young people in Northern Sydney. We do this by providing free, easily accessed, responsive, confidential mental health support and counselling for adolescents at our centres in Lindfield, Hornsby, Crows Nest and Avalon, and by providing a range of early intervention mental health and well being workshops and support groups in school and community settings across Northern Sydney.
About This Cause
KYDS exists to reduce the impact of mental health and well being issues amongst young people in Northern Sydney. We do this by providing free, easily accessed, responsive and confidential mental health services and counselling for adolescents at our centres in Lindfield and Hornsby, and by providing a range of early intervention mental health and well being workshops and support groups in school and community settings across Northern Sydney. KYDS was established in 2005 as an initiative of the Rotary Club of Lindfield, with support from Ku-ring-gai Council. KYDS is now a fully independent charity, providing around 2,500 individual counselling sessions each year, and reaching a further 3000 - 4000 young people and families through school and community group programs annually. We work along the full spectrum of adolescent experiences - to reduce the number of young people experiencing adverse situations and to help those who do. Our outreach programs cover topics such as social preparation for high school, body image and self esteem, risky behaviours, IT management, alcohol and other drugs, safe partying, mental health and well being support. KYDS also runs a group therapy program called "Managing Your Mood" - a 16 week DBT group especially for teens with mild to moderate mental health issues, focused on skill-building in the areas of emotional regulation and mindfulness. At an individual level, our team of staff counsellors and psychologists work with young people to help them understand and effectively cope with issues such as bullying, trauma, assault, domestic violence, anxiety, depression, self harm, anger, loneliness, grief, loss, family break ups, communication break downs, suicidal thoughts and actions. KYDS services for young people are free and confidential, and no referral is needed. Funding for our one-to-one service is secured through donations, philanthropic grants, and fundraising activities. KYDS does not receive any on-going state or federal government support. Group programs are conducted on a cost-recovery basis, or funded via grants made to KYDS or the benefiting community group.
