Mission Statement

Menzies Research Institute Tasmania exists to improve human health and wellbeing by performing excellent basic laboratory, clinical and population health research that focuses on the major diseases affecting the Tasmanian community. Our research takes a bench-to-bedside and disease prevention approach and is aimed at improving patient care and clinical outcomes for the community by translating knowledge into clinical and policy actions, and through the commercial application of discoveries. Menzies trains and educates future research scientists, clinicians and health professionals. Over the next decade Menzies' research will reflect the burden of disease in the Tasmanian community and our expertise in addressing these diseases. This will be achieved through our unique role and profile in Tasmania, leveraging off a stable population base and an environment where there are substantial challenges to the provision of health care based on funding limitations and specific challenges relating to disadvantage.

About This Cause

The Menzies Research Institute Tasmania, formerly known as the Menzies Centre for Population Research, was established in 1988 by the Menzies Foundation, with support from the Tasmanian Government and the University of Tasmania. Menzies was primarily established to address the health issues facing the Tasmanian community. From modest beginnings, Menzies quickly gained an international reputation for its innovative work into the link between babies' sleeping position and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). From this work our research expanded and population health and epidemiological research programs were developed. In 2006, we expanded our focus to include both clinical and basic science, to ensure that the depth and quality of our research was enhanced and strengthened. In 2010, Menzies opened a new $58 million world-class medical research, clinical and education facility known as Medical Science 1 (MS1). In early 2013, a $90 million facility known as Medical Science 2 (MS2) will officially open. MS2 will enable us to further expand our highly innovative research program, attract more internationally renowned researchers to our shore, make more discoveries, and intensify the pace of turning our discoveries into better treatments and health practices for the Tasmanian community. Together, MS1 and MS2 will be known as the UTAS Medical Science Precinct. The new medical science precinct will keep Tasmania at the forefront both in Australia and internationally in medical research, clinical translation and education - well into the future. Significant research breakthroughs made by Menzies over the last 25 years include discovering: 1) The link between babies' sleeping position and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) 2) Genetic markers linked to men's risk of developing prostate cancer 3) Children who are exposed to their parents' cigarette smoke may suffer an irreversible impact to their cardiovascular health later in life 4) Higher vitamin D levels are associated with a lower relapse risk in multiple sclerosis 5) Childhood obesity does not permanently increase cardiovascular risk if obesity in adulthood is avoided 6) Nerve cells in undamaged parts of the brain can remodel themselves in response to acquired brain injury 7) Platelets found in the blood kill the malaria parasite during the early stages of a malarial infection. At the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania our aspiration is to contribute significantly to human health and wellbeing, with particular emphasis upon research that takes advantage of Tasmania’s unique population resource and other competitive advantages. Our research efforts focus on preventing a range of diseases including arthritis, cancer, multiple sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes type-2, osteoporosis, mental health, obesity and dementia. We are undertaking nationwide studies and collaborating with interstate and international researchers.
