Mission Statement
FemiliPNG Australia’s partnership with Femili PNG assists survivors of family and sexual violence in Papua New Guinea to access the life-saving and life-changing services they need.
About This Cause
FemiliPNG Australia is an Australian non-profit that supports Femili PNG, a leading Papua New Guinean NGO that assists survivors of family and sexual violence. Family and sexual violence disproportionately affects women and girls - with up to 68% of women in PNG experiencing violence at some stage in their lives. Out of these survivors, less than 35% will seek help. Navigating the complex care and justice systems can be challenging for survivors to do on their own. Many need support accessing safe accommodation, medical care, law and justice interventions, financial and vocational resources, and more. Opening their doors in 2014, Femili PNG was established to help survivors access support from the many different service providers. They were the first Papua New Guinean organisation to take a case management approach to supporting survivors. Trained caseworkers work with survivors to determine their personal goals, and then assist them to achieve these goals. Survivors are empowered to make decisions relating to their own well-being and safety, with caseworkers advocating for their rights within the system. Since welcoming their first client 10 years ago, Femili PNG has assisted over 6,700 survivors to access the care they need. Their organisation has grown from just 7 staff in Lae to 61 staff across three locations. Services expanded to Port Moresby in 2018 under the Bel isi PNG initiative, where they also operate the Bel isi PNG Safe House; and to Goroka in 2021. Femili PNG now takes in almost 90 new clients a month. It supports about 100 women and children in safe house accommodation every night, and it helps about 20 clients every month obtain restraining orders. In addition to providing case management assistance, Femili PNG undertakes extensive outreach to raise awareness about family and sexual violence and what help is available. They train community leaders to support survivors locally; work in close collaboration with other service providers to enhance their impact; and help coordinate family and sexual violence services in the regions where they operate. Femili PNG also undertakes research-based advocacy, working to improve government responses to gender-based violence. Femili PNG’s work has been internationally recognised. One independent evaluation noted that: “Femili PNG’s innovative approach focuses on survivors rather than services. Its effectiveness is predicated on strong partnerships with existing services, additional resources and/or support provided as needed. Femili PNG has been referred to as ‘The glue between the police force, courts, health systems and women’s shelters.’” FemiliPNG Australia was established in 2015 as an Australian support organisation for Femili PNG. We support Femili PNG with grants and with technical expertise. FemiliPNG Australia is a registered charity with The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC); and is an accredited member of the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), and of the Australian Government’s NGO Cooperation Program (ANCP). Donations to FemiliPNG Australia are tax-deductible, and are an effective way to contribute to an exciting, locally-led initiative to tackle gender-based violence in Papua New Guinea. 2024 marks Femili PNG’s Tenth Anniversary – a significant milestone.
