Mission Statement

The Leukaemia Foundation is the Australian charity stopping blood cancer from wrecking lives. We exist for every Australian affected by any type of blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. Some blood cancers can be beaten; some take your life and some stay with you forever. With your help, we can offer expert support, fund leading-edge research and campaign to make change, ultimately achieving the big goal of zero lives lost to blood cancer by 2035.

About This Cause

Your blood is a remarkable thing. It keeps you alive by giving your body what it needs, taking away what it doesn’t and fighting off infection. Blood cancer stops your blood from doing what it needs to keep you alive and healthy. Sadly, another 50 Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer each day, joining more than 110,000 people living with the devastating impact of our second most diagnosed cancer. Blood cancer does not discriminate, and a range of things affect someone’s chances of surviving and it can be incurable. 15 Australians will lose their life to blood cancer each and every day. When life is interrupted by a devastating blood cancer diagnosis, the Leukaemia Foundation is there, offering expert support, funding leading-edge research and campaigning for change. Here’s how: Expert support The Leukaemia Foundation offers a range of services to help people through the rollercoaster that is blood cancer when it is needed most. We help people during their treatment by offering accommodation near most major hospitals and help getting to and from appointments. Last year, more than 700 families stayed in our accommodation and nearly 400 people benefitted from our transport service. The Leukaemia Foundation’s highly trained Blood Cancer Support Coordinators offer emotional support to patients and their loved ones alongside a range of health and wellbeing services. Last year, our support coordinators connected with our community 22,000 times through phone calls, text messages and video conferencing. We also provide trusted information to empower people living with blood cancer to navigate the road ahead, including newsletters, booklets, education and support groups, and online information. Last year the Leukaemia Foundation ran more than 50 online education and support groups, and more than 400,000 people accessed blood cancer information on our website. Leading-edge research The Leukaemia Foundation’s research program drives rapid advancements in blood cancer treatments, encourages the careers of promising scientists, discovers new diagnostics and novel therapies, and helps give Australians access to global clinical trials. We have been supporting Australian blood cancer research for more than 25 years. We aim to fund high-impact research by concentrating our resources on projects with broad potential for all people living with blood cancer. The Leukaemia Foundation’s investment in research focuses on innovation in diagnosis, treatments, and quality of life, right across the blood cancer spectrum. We’re driving discovery in most types of blood cancer, including lymphoma, leukaemia, myeloma, MDS, MPN and amyloidosis, as well as graft versus host disease, a dangerous side effect of a stem cell transplant. Campaigning for change Blood cancer is one of Australia’s most common and most dangerous cancers and we’re working to change that. We advocate for better policies, better access to new and innovative treatments, better diagnostics and, ultimately, better outcomes so that more people live through blood cancer and live well. The Leukaemia Foundation has been commissioned by the Australian Government to develop and deliver our first ever National Strategic Action Plan for Blood Cancer on behalf of the blood cancer community. We also help to fast-track affordable access to innovate treatments by engaging with governments at all levels. Last year, the Leukaemia Foundation made 15 submissions supporting the listing of new drugs on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS), and five life-saving drugs are now within affordable reach for most Australians.
