Mission Statement
Schizy Incorporated strives for personal and community pride and genuine mental health healing connections with our global lived-experience neighbourhood, through the creative arts and connection with the natural environment.
About This Cause
Schizy Inc is a disability led creative arts organisation, operating from Melbourne, Australia. It was set up in 2008 by talented artist, Heidi Everett, to address the lack of meaningful creative arts experiences for people like her with complex mental illnesses like schizophrenia. Current membership is around 200 artists with lived experience, with a growing base of allies in arts industries and communities such as film, media, studios, galleries and local councils, plus mentors in governance and strategy. Schizy Inc. produces the only fun Schizophrenia Week event in Victoria, with programs throughout the year to coincide with international days like World Peace Day and Companion Animal Day. THE CREATIVE ARTS AND MENTAL HEALTH - Schizy Inc innovates arts programs ahead of its time. For example, in Schizy Week 'One Love' Jam brought together 30 musicians with lived experience from Ireland, Canada, Wales, England and New Zealand, using virtual technology, jamming the song simultaneously with hundreds of lived experience musicians and Melbourne bands. From multi-day arts events in disadvantaged suburbs, to a red carpet film gala night at Australian Centre for Moving Image, Schizy Inc. places its people in the forefront of not only arts making, but of the arts industry. Its flagship project, Mojo Film Festival, has led the creation, promotion and respect of short films and media made by people with schizophrenia. To engage industry, film experts are invited to sit on forum panels and teach skills during Mojo, and filmmakers from around the world are invited to contribute. SCHIZY FARM - With this new major project, we aim to revolutionise the way mental health services are delivered in Victoria by setting up a pilot program in a rural setting that will deliver evidence-based healing experiences for people with schizophrenia. Individualised contracts will give them access to our service and others in the local community that collaborate to provide the best possible opportunities for healing. This program aligns with several of the findings and recommendations contained in the Victorian Government's 2021 Royal Commission into the Victorian Mental Health System. The pilot will be professionally evaluated and, if successful, lead to world-first unprecedented change in mental health services and outcomes. Our management committee members, all with lived experience, have skills in governance, administration and the creative arts and are well qualified to manage a unique, efficient and innovative organisation with a great future in modelling much-needed change in the way mental health services are delivered. Schizy Inc. has commissioned a feasibility study to support the concept of farm-based healing programs. There is much evidence for the mental health effect of immersion in nature, contact with animals and physical activity, all of which will be offered through the farm program. We now need a gift or loan of rural land, or rental money, towards our three-year pilot program. We know that with all the volunteer support and passion for the proposal, we will succeed in starting a ground-up revolution in mental health that will be ready for expanded scale at the end of the pilot period.
