About This Cause
LIGHT FOR THE WORLD aims at an inclusive society where all persons are equally participating in their social, political, economic, and cultural environments. We are a a disability and development NGO that has offices and associated members in Austria, Belgium, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, the Czech Republic, Mozambique, the Netherlands, and South Sudan. Our main areas of expertise are inclusive development, eye care, inclusive education, ophthalmology, and community based rehabilitation of persons with disabilities. In 2015, our work reached 1,284,008 persons in developing regions around the globe: * 48,762 sight saving cataract surgeries were carried out in eye clinics supported by LIGHT FOR THE WORLD. * 26,185 eye lid surgeries relieved pain and stopped the process of persons suffering from trachoma losing their sight. * In total, 1,110,969 people received eye care services. * 51,158 children with disabilities acessed various kinds of rehabilitation and assistive devices, with 8,838 also receiving school education. Our support targets persons with disabilities living in poverty who are among the most excluded and underprivileged groups in any society. Putting them at the centre of our development efforts will advance the removal of barriers impeding other excluded groups as well. We pay specific attention to groups of persons with disabilities whose socio-economic status is particularly vulnerable: deafblind persons, hearing impaired persons, persons with learning difficulties, persons with disabilities affected by HIV/AIDS, women with disabilities, and children with disabilities. Our work follows a human-rights-based approach. Our guiding principles are non-discrimination, participation, empowerment, and accountability.
