Mission Statement
Our Mission is to promote social insertion and integration opportunities by teaching English to low-income communities in Brazil.
About This Cause
Cidadão Pró-Mundo (CPM) is a 24-years old NGO that promotes equal opportunities and social integration to 2,500 low-income students at 12 communities within the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro through voluntary and completely free English language teaching. We currently engage over 1,300 volunteers who teach in pairs one class per month in an innovative rotational volunteering model that has proved extremely successful overtime, as indicated by our solid volunteers retention rate (approximately 70%) and significant growth over the last few years (we have nearly tripled the number of volunteers and students impacted within the last 5 years: from 850 in 2013 to 2,362 in 2018). CPM is currently the largest and best structured English teaching NGO in Brazil. English is still a “privileged asset” in developing countries. In Brazil, studies indicate that no more than 10% of the population can communicate in English. The 2017 EF English Proficiency Index places Brazil only at the 41st position among 80 countries assessed, being the 4th in Latin America despite its predominantly larger economy in the region. Furthermore, more than 50% of Brazilian public school English teachers are below the intermediate level in the Common European Framework (CEFR), as indicated by the Inter-American Dialogue report on “English Language Learning in Latin America.” Meanwhile, surveys show that those who can speak English have significant advantages in an increasingly globalized world. Wages can be up to 35% higher and professionals looking for re-employment have 50% more chances if they have advanced English skills. Within this context, at Cidadão Pró-Mundo we believe that English is a core social development skill that allows our students to explore several other opportunities that otherwise they would never be able to. As English is widely accepted as the world’s global language, when we teach we not only empower our students to communicate much beyond their communities by expanding their perspectives but we (volunteers) also learn enormously from our students about the social challenges and realities that make our society so unequal. CPM decided to offer the English course remotely in the second half of 2020. Main drivers for the decision were the uncertainty around the usage of the physical spaces in which the NGO operates and the uncertainties around the Covid-19 pandemic developments in Brazil. Classes will start in the last week of August and CPM formed four different working groups (technological, pedagogical, tutorship/mentorship, students opportunities) focused on the students. Remote teaching designed by pedagogical team will have 60 to 90 minutes per week of remote synchronous teaching. The tech tool chosen was Google Classroom/Google Meet. CPM provided over than 56 tablets and 280 computers, containing mobile internet and Wi-Fi with 4G connection to our students. Reaching more than 1344 people, including family members of CPM students. We are confident that English can change lives simply because that’s exactly what we have been doing for over twenty five years.
