Mission Statement
Instituto Dara was founded in 1991 by Dr. Vera Cordeiro, general practitioner with a specialization in Psychosomatic, who worked at Lagoa Federal Hospital for 20 years, 10 of which she dedicated to Pediatrics. When treating patients at the hospital, Vera realized that the medical care was incomplete. She was able to treat the disease, but the children returned to hospital, were released to unhealthy homes, with parents who were often times unemployed and without the means to give them adequate care. It was a vicious cycle: poverty, disease, admission into the hospital, discharge, re-admission and death. Saúde Criança works to address the real cause of many of the diseases treated in public hospitals and give them dignity
About This Cause
Instituto Dara is a nonprofit social enterprise with no political or religious affiliation. Instituto Dara has developed a pioneering methodology that improves the home environment and promotes the self-sufficiency of Brazilian families with children suffering from chronic disease and poverty. The causes of poverty and illness are multidimensional. To address these complex problems Saúde Criança uses a multidisciplinary and integrated approach by focusing on five factors crucial for the family’s well-being: health, housing, citizenship, income and education. Instituto Dara fights for social inclusion by promoting human development. Instituto Dara’s work is based on a Family Action Plan (PAF), a set of actions with goals and deadlines unique to each family assisted. The PAF is developed by a multidisciplinary team of social workers, nutritionists, psychologists, psychiatrists and lawyers, among others, with the collaboration of the family. Every family is assisted individually, according to their needs and potentials, during a period of approximately two years. The family’s progress is tracked in regular meetings with the Instituto Dara a team with the objective of helping the family achieve dignity and autonomy.
