Mission Statement

Nix Diversidade works to value, protect, include, and promote diversity across multiple areas of society. Its mission is to contribute to the construction of a more inclusive and equitable society through actions in culture, education, sustainability, and especially in sports. In sports, Nix focuses on creating inclusive spaces for trans people by organizing leisure activities and training sessions in safe environments, supported by qualified teams. These activities are developed with the involvement of specialists in medicine, nutrition, psychology, and other areas to ensure proper support for participants. Nix promotes community-based organization, access to rights, and visibility for LGBTQIA+ people, particularly those who face greater social barriers. Through partnerships and collaborative networks, the organization seeks to expand opportunities for participation and belonging in public life.

About This Cause

NIX – Founded in 2001, Nix Diversidade has a long-standing commitment to diversity and inclusion in Brazil, particularly through initiatives that promote access, awareness, and participation of LGBTQIA+ people in sport. In its activities, board composition, and partnerships, Nix consistently ensures that its actions contribute to the recognition and preservation of diversity. It operates across various fields, including culture, education, and sustainability. In sport, it has become a point of reference for LGBTQIA+ diversity and inclusion, with more than six years of continuous work with the community. The organisation currently supports 306 members, including trans and non-binary people, as well as cisgender gay and lesbian individuals. Around 70% of these members come from low-income backgrounds or are in situations of social vulnerability. The remaining 30% are also LGBTQIA+ people from other social classes. Both groups share limited access to sport through traditional means and find in Nix’s projects greater opportunities for participation and social connection. Nix’s core activity in this field is the management of inclusive LGBTQIA+ sport collectives. These are grassroots groups formed by members of the community, offering opportunities to engage in sport in safe environments and on a regular basis. These collectives also provide a mutual support network that contributes to the social development of their participants. The organisation currently manages six pioneering inclusive sport collectives in Brazil. Among them are Angels Volley, the first trans women’s sport collective in the country; Meninos Bons de Bola, the first trans men’s football collective in the world; and Real Centro, the first LGBTQIA+ sport initiative in Brazil, active since 1990. Nix’s work is supported by research and community-based mapping. In 2022, in partnership with Nike, it published the study “Diversity & Inclusion in Sport – Achievements and Challenges for the LGBTQIA+ Community in Brazil”, a comprehensive report that includes historical analysis and data collected from 1,037 LGBTQIA+ respondents across the country. That same year, also in collaboration with Nike, Nix launched a nationwide mapping of inclusive collectives, registering groups from all regions and creating a network of over 187 collectives and more than 4,000 individuals. Following the publication of the study, Nix began to be consulted by media outlets such as CNN, Rede Globo, and Estadão on matters related to sport and inclusion. It has also been invited to give talks and lectures for organisations, companies, and events such as Nike, Sky, SESC, and the 7th International Diversity Conference. For SESC, Nix contributed both as a guest lecturer in its Sports Management Course and as a consultant for the development of trans-inclusive projects within its units. It also designed and delivered a 9-hour training course on LGBTQIA+ Diversity and Inclusion in Sport for SESC’s Research and Training Centre. In partnership with the São Paulo branch of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB), Nix co-organised and curated the seminar “LGBTphobia in Football and Sport” alongside the OAB’s Diversity Commission. In 2023, two new mappings of LGBTQIA+ sport were released, identifying 24 football fan groups and 83 community-oriented sports events across multiple disciplines. These reports also offered a historical perspective on the challenges and dynamics surrounding such initiatives. As a result of this work, Nix has established partnerships with organisations and companies that support its projects, including Nike, IBM, Itaú, Droga Raia, Reckitt, Barilla, the São Paulo Municipal Department of Sport, and the São Paulo Municipal Department of Human Rights and Citizenship, among others. The student consultancy of the School of Physical Education at the University of São Paulo partnered with Nix to organise the Beegames in July 2023, featuring the participation of inclusive volleyball collectives. In 2022, Nix was recognised by Nike during its international 50th anniversary celebrations as a leading example in sport and inclusion in Brazil. That same year, it received the “Promoters of Development” award in its 17th edition, presented by the São Paulo City Council. Among its recent projects in other areas are the support for the Trans Health Care Symposium held by Hospital Sírio-Libanês in July 2023, curatorship of the 4th, 5th, and 6th editions of the Quitutes e Batuques festival from 2021 to 2023, and the approval of Quintal dos Deuses, an album of Afro-Brazilian music, which ranked third among 1,030 projects selected through the ProAC ICMS public funding programme in São Paulo.
