About This Cause

From 1994 onwards, Despertar began to expand its presence in the community, offering courses for adults as well, with the aim of working alongside the families of the teenagers. Between 1996 and 2015, the Despertar Community Association managed the Parque Dorotéia Child Education Center (CEI), which annually served 160 (one hundred and sixty) children from 0 (zero) to 3 (three) years old, providing them with daily meals, age-appropriate pedagogical activities, as well as hygiene and health care. In 2015, after 19 years of dedication to the children of Parque Dorotéia neighborhood and surrounding areas, determined to concentrate its efforts at its main headquarters, Despertar passed on the administration of the daycare center to the Casa dos Curumins Association, which conducts high-quality work in the region. In 1997, upon realizing the efforts of individuals to overcome adverse conditions of housing, health, nutrition, employment, and public transportation, it was found that illiteracy was at the root of all these problems. Considering alternatives to this reality, Despertar offered a Literacy Program at Unit I, capable of multiplying significant and liberating knowledge that could offer elements of transformation in the living conditions of adult individuals, serving from Monday to Friday, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm, which has already taught 185 (one hundred and eighty-five) people to read and write. In 1998, it entered into a technical cooperation agreement with the National Service for Industrial Apprenticeship (SENAI Ary Torres headquarters) for the certification of the courses offered at Unit I. In 2002, in response to the community's appeals, the Despertar Community Association implemented social projects for Training and Income Generation for adults, encouraging them to find the best solution to their problems, reclaiming their role in society to participate with pride and responsibility. The expansion of projects that awaken and promote cultural diversity is much more than a learning tool; it plays a relevant role in the civic education of young people and the entire community. Therefore, the Social Organization implemented its first socio-cultural project to engage young people with percussion and dance, focusing on the music of Brazilian popular tradition. Thus, the Charanga Project was born in 2002. In 2003, the Library underwent a restructuring, allowing the physical and technical reorganization of its collection to serve the public for which it is intended: Despertar students and the entire community of Jardim Vilas Boas in the southern zone of São Paulo. Between 2003 and 2014, the Despertar Community Association, in partnership with the Digital Inclusion Coordination - PMSP, maintained a Community Telecenter that achieved the objective of providing community residents with access to the greatest, best, and fastest means of communication – the internet. While active, the Telecenter provided a low-income individuals have the right to exercise their citizenship. In 2005, the Social Organization gained recognition for the effectiveness of its Cultural projects through the approval of three projects funded by FUMCAD fundraising: - Charanga Project, Cultural Dialogue Project, and Cultural Workshops Project, all focused on culture to serve people aged 10 to 18 to expand the artistic and cultural universe of the community capable of promoting an improvement in the quality of life. Also, in this year, through recognition by SESI as a welfare entity attentive to the needs of the population, Despertar establishes a partnership in the SESI "Athlete of the Future" Project with judo classes at Unit I, for 120 (one hundred and twenty) people of both sexes, aged 7 to 17 years and 11 months through "CAT José Roberto Magalhães Teixeira de Diadema - SP". In addition to judo, sports activities are offered in the following modalities: volleyball, chess, capoeira, gymnastics, and stretching, with all activities being supervised by a specialized professional. Another fundamental action developed by Despertar was born in 2006, the Employability Department, which aims to promote the inclusion of young people in the job market, as well as raise awareness, sensitize, and mobilize companies and society to support social causes. This work, called "Social Employability," seeks partnerships with companies, offering them professionals with qualified labor and the opportunity to support social actions for free. This initiative arises to meet the needs of the community and the job market, which increasingly requires flexibility, speed, and effectiveness in its recruitment and selection processes. By hiring one of our students, the company not only fulfills its social responsibility but also hires a qualified young person with well-structured basic and specific skills, capable of differentiating themselves in the competition for opportunities in an increasingly competitive job market. From November 13, 2008, to June 30, 2011, Social Projects for Training and Income Generation for adults were developed in partnership with the Municipal Government of São Paulo - Municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance and Development, through the service called Conviviality Center, which served more than 3,845 (three thousand eight hundred and forty-five) people. In 2010, more projects were initiated through financial resources fundraising from FUMCAD with the purpose of promoting the training of people aged 11 to 18 at the Digital Production and Cultural Action Center through the projects "Integrated Digital Awakening (DDI)" and "BookMania". In 2011, to contribute to the comprehensive education of children and adolescents and believing in the strengthening of interpersonal and physical relationships promoted by sports, Despertar welcomed 200 (two hundred) individuals aged 7 to 17 years and 11 months to participate in various modalities of the "Sports - Freedom & Citizenship Project", with financial resources raised through FUMCAD. In 2015, as recognition of its work within the community, Despertar established an unprecedented partnership in the City of São Paulo through a Technical-Educational Cooperation Agreement with the Centro Paula Souza, an Autarchy linked to the State Secretariat of Economic Development, Science, Technology, and Innovation. In the same year, Despertar initiated the Cultural Project "Despertar - Orchestrating Life", which aims to offer String, Wind, and Percussion workshops for children and adolescents between 12 and 17 years old, through the signing of a Cooperation Agreement with the Municipal Secretariat of Human Rights and Citizenship. As a stimulus to the Social Organization's Sports Center, Despertar signed another Cooperation Agreement in 2016 with the Municipal Secretariat of Human Rights and Citizenship to initiate the approved Project with the Municipal Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents - CMDCA called "Awakening to Sports", which aims to provide sports activities in the modalities of Futsal, Volleyball, Capoeira, and Chess for 66 children and adolescents aged 8 to 17. In 2020, Despertar competed for the Public Call Notice in the Cidade Ademar region for the offering of its Work Plan and its Plan was recognized as the most complete and capable of offering the best service to the adolescents and youth of the region, thus obtaining the renewal of its Collaboration Agreement under No. 188/SMADS/2020, with the Municipal Secretariat of Assistance and Social Development - SMADS. For the continuity of its cultural activities, in July 2021, it signed the Grant Agreement No. 2861216/2019, with the State Secretariat of Social Development - SEDS for the execution of the Despertar Musical Production Project, approved by the State Council for the Rights of Children and Adolescents - CONDECA. In the pursuit of its objectives, the Community Association seeks resources from public or private, national or international entities, tax incentives, contributions from members, and event organization. The Despertar Community Association operates in Jardim Vilas Boas, a peripheral area of the southern zone of São Paulo, a region of high social vulnerability, serving from Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 9:30 pm and on Saturdays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. In all courses for adolescents, breakfast and lunch or lunch and snacks are served according to the attended period, providing them with a better quality of life and knowledge that offer better chances of entering an increasingly competitive and demanding job market. In thirty years of existence of uninterrupted actions with children, young people, and adults, it has benefited more than 95,000 people, including 42,000 young people in courses for Professional Initiation Training in various professional areas. The Despertar Community Association also offers sports and culture courses and keeps a sports court and library open to the community in the territory.
