Mission Statement
To offer specialized medical care, primarily surgeries, to indigenous populations living in geographically isolated areas, without access to specialised health, with service excellence and responsible management. Our vision is to provide access to specialized medical care for populations living in isolated areas.
About This Cause
Indigenous peoples basically survive from hunting, fishing and farming. When a person is affected by an illness such as hernia, for example, they are unable to work and provide for the family. With EDS´s surgical expeditions, we made it possible for indigenous people to have access to surgical procedures free of charge and extremely quickly, remaining close to their families and returning to productive life. In a single expedition we can perform approximately 350 surgeries for hernias, cataracts, pterygiums, among others, which are relatively simple to operate, but very compromising for the indigenous people. Our Mobile Hospital Complex solution emerged as an advantageous alternative, as it prevents the indigenous people from moving to large centers. A boat trip can take up to 20 days and the complete treatment of a simple surgery such as a cataract, for example, would require the patient to stay in the big city, without means of survival, for more than a year. With EDS surgical expeditions, the indigenous person is taken by EDS to the community where the complex is installed, receives free consultation, can be operated and return home, all in less than 5 days. With the solution of the mobile surgical center, EDS has covered an area of 500 thousand square kilometers in the Amazon, performed more than 8,000 surgeries, 60,000 consultations, 90,000 exams and procedures. We can perform about 350 surgeries, 4 thousand medical consultations in different specialties, 5,000 exams and procedures, all in a single expedition lasting 7 days. This structure developed by EDS itself that comprises a surgical center with 6 environments, ambulatories, and clinics of various specialties, in addition to the dental office. It is energetically self-sufficient and can be transported anywhere in the Amazon by any means, be it river, air, or land transportWe also donate prescription glasses, medicine, basic food baskets, in addition to a major renovation in the communities that receive the expeditions. We carry out three major expeditions each year and we have as an audience the indigenous and riverside peoples who live isolated. The most benefited are adults and elderly between 40 and 80 years old due to eye diseases. We also treat gynecological cases with preventive surgery and perform an early diagnosis of cervical cancer. In addition, with the advance of the pandemic in Brazil, especially in the Amazon, in 2020, we developed and implemented 262 Field Wards in isolated indigenous communities, offering treatment through mini oxygen plants to patients affected by Covid-19. In view of the extreme difficulty of these patients to travel to hospitals in large centers, we estimate that this measure has benefited more than 70,000 people.
