Mission Statement
Holistic Education – Our method of teaching values the development of the intellect through an integrated and holistic way. We do this by following the principles of Waldorf education and promoting free play, love, and affection – things that may sound trivial but are in fact vital to children’s self-development. We prioritize inclusive education and our values aim for the wellbeing and development of our ‘babies’. We also offer financial support for elementary school students to ensure that, after reaching the limit age in our pre-school, our ‘babies’ can continue their education in a private institution. Health and Nutrition - For us, healthy eating is a priority. It is proven that when a child has an adequate diet, the whole body works in a much better way, from growth, muscle formation, bone strengthening, as well as their cognitive development. To support a healthy diet, we offer a vegetarian menu carefully developed by a nutritionist. Always valuing health, we work in partnership with a local health NGO in order to annually offer medical and dental support to the community. Female Empowerment - Our teachers are three women from the community who previously did not have a degree. Today, financially supported by Hai, these women are attending a Waldorf Education College with a specialization in Child Psychology. In addition to this, to support the development of women in our community, we created a company dedicated to income generation and development to the mothers of our babies. We call this the 'Mamas business’. Thirteen mothers work with us learning and developing handmade products for export and sale in Brazil and Germany, in partnership with Project Três (an initiative to empower and promote the economic development of women). Local Impact and Development - Supporting local workers and businesses is how we promote the local economy. All the employees at our center are from the Kabiria community - not only in the educational area, but in every service that is needed. We encourage the local economy by purchasing 100% of the food and products our center uses from the community itself.
About This Cause
Hai Africa is a nonprofit organization that was established in 2015 as a way to responsibly make a difference in the Kabiria community. Hai is a center that prides itself on financing the development of children, women, and local businesses by offering support, education, and training to the community. In addition, Hai also promotes children's wellbeing and quality of life through healthy plant-based nutrition and holistic education based on the principles of Waldorf education. A volunteering trip to Africa turned into a dream to go further and do more. From the vision of a Brazilian, and with the help of a local, Hai Africa was born. Starting from a small house in Kabiria (a region on the outskirts of Kenya's capital, Nairobi) Hai started its activities when it received and promoted creative and educational activities for 13 children on May 4th, 2015. Over the years, Hai has grown into a center that serves more than 40 children (known as 'babies'), has 6 employees, empowers 15 women (kindly known as 'mamas'), and finances the education of 3 teachers and the continuing education for 29 children in elementary school. What was intended to only be a space to offer food and activities to children has become an institution that positively transforms the lives of those who are in this community.
